Take a look at this, folks: The first official stills from Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's next tale of bloody vengeance, bad language, and worse behavoir. So far, we've just seen a stylized poster and some meager spy photos from the Louisiana set, but today, on this most auspicious of days, we have for you two actual images straight out of Tarantino's Spaghetti Western-inspired Southern epic, including a first look at the two heroes and the big, bad villain.
Life of Pi, an adaptation of the hugely acclaimed bestseller by Yann Martel, has been in the works under several different directors since the novel was published over a decade, but the film is actually set to hit theaters at the end of this year. As such, we now have our first look at a still from the film. As you'd expect, it has the protagonist, Pi, a Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker, and a lifeboat.
Relativity Media has released the first official still from House at the End of the Street, this year's atmospheric thriller starring none other than Jennifer Lawrence. Doubtless many readers saw Lawrence over the last weekend, when The Hunger Games had the third-highest opening weekend in film history, undeniably making Lawrence a certified movie star.
In House at the End of the Street, Lawrence plays Elissa, who, along with her mother played by fellow Academy Award nominee Elisabeth Shue, move to a new town. All is well until they discover that the house next door was the site of a horrific double murder and Lawrence's character begins a friendship with the only survivor, played by Max Thieriot.
Hey everybody, The CW has revealed an official first look at Arrow, featuring Stephen Amell in costume as DC Comics hero Green Arrow. The dark image has Amell as a hooded Oliver Queen, highlighting the stripped-down costume. That costume is designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who is a favorite of both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, with credits including Dark Shadows, The Rum Diary, Sleepy Hollow, The Tourist, and Big Fish, as well as Joe vs. the Volcano and The Silence of the Lambs.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer – who has spent three decades pumping out cinematic product that captures the zeitgeist – has demonstrated his promotional flare by unveiling the first official image from The Lone Ranger, his new project with Gore Verbinski, the director the first three films in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The image introduces Armie Hammer as the titular western avenger and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick, Tonto.
Before Doug Liman's The Bourne Identity came about a decade ago, the idea of Matt Damon as an unstoppably badass amnesiac assassin was sort of laughable. How times change. After the Bourne franchise got bigger with two subsequent installments under director Paul Greengrass, Damon and the helmer opted not to return for a fourth go-around. Looking to capitalize on the franchise even without the central figures, Universal Pictures has gone ahead with The Bourne Legacy, which does not, in fact, feature Jason Bourne.
Instead, Jeremy Renner is taking over as a new, Bournesque character who goes by the name Aaron Cross. As part of the end of the week image-palooza, we now have our first official look at Cross in The Bourne Legacy. How does he look? Almost exactly like you'd expect. The one-time star of National Lampoon's Senior Trip* is mean-mugging with the conviction of a two-time Oscar nominee, and he's wearing a pretty cool jacket too.
The very first official image of Bill Murray in character as the 32nd President of These United States of America has arrived online. Said image is from Hyde Park on Hudson, which sees Murray playing Franklin Delano Roosevelt during a weekend in 1939 when King George VI became the first British Monarch to formally visit the U.S. King George VI is the same stammering royal featured in The King's Speech, and here he's played not by Colin Firth, but by Samuel West. The king, stopping by upstate New York, will be a supporting character, as Hyde Park on Hudson revolves around Roosevelt's relationship with his cousin.
Between films like 300, Gamer, and Law Abiding Citizen, there's no doubt that Gerard Butler can play a formidable tough guy, but in Machine Gun Preacher, he'll expand his persona by playing a remarkable real-life figure. He stars as Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker who undergoes a spiritual and moral transformation, becoming the founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization and helping to save hundreds of orphaned children forced in the Lord's Resistance Army. Today, Relativity Media released the very first look at Machine Gun Preacher, with Butler in character as Sam Childers, alongside Souleymane Sy Savane.
It's a testament to Peter Jackson's hugely successful adaptation of JRR Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings that after capturing the cultural zeitgeist, truckloads of money, and a whole mess of Oscars, the series never suffered a backlash along the lines of, say, Titanic. Yes, there has been almost a decade of jokes about the extended epilogue of The Return of the King, but they're generally good-natured, and the films are still beloved. That's good news for The Hobbit, Jackson's two-part return to Middle Earth, currently filming in Wellington, New Zealand. The first official images from the film arrived today, with Martin Freeman looking perfect as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen once again enjoying the Halfling's Leaf at his leisure, and one behind-the scenes shot of Jackson and Freeman in Bag End.
The first official stills of Helen Mirren and Russell Brand in character as Arthur have emerged, thanks to a profile on the film and star in the NY Times. Although based on the lovable drunk originally portrayed by Dudley Moore, Brand seems to be playing himself, i.e. an ascot-wearing rapscallion with a penchant for making a (insert preferred word here) out of himself. Hey, whatever pays the bills.
