With recognizable properties at an all-time premium amongst movie studios, it is in no way surprising that Warner Bros is looking to get a new theatrical The Twilight Zone up and running. The would be revival of Rod Serling's classic television series that ran from 1959 to 1964 and featured fiercely intelligent, top-notch storytelling that often ended with a surprising conclusion upending the audience's notions of everything that preceded it. For the new would-be movie, Warner Bros has sight their sights pretty high, as their wishlist for a potential The Twilight Zone director includes Christopher Nolan, Alfonso Cuaran, Rupert Wyatt, and Michael Bay.
Natalie Portman has been offered the lead role in Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron's epic sci-fi film that seemed stalled last week when Angelina Jolie passed on it for the second time. Now it's Portman's turn to contemplate the ambitious film, which will co-star Robert Downey Jr.
Even as it seemed as though it was coming down to Scarlett Johansson vs. Blake Lively for the female lead in Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, Warner Bros. is determined to cast Angelina Jolie in the 3D sci-fi flick... Only problem is, she doesn't want to do it. A big problem indeed.
While the film, about two astronauts trapped in space after their ship is damaged, already stars Robert Downey Jr. (himself of course an A-lister), but his character is only a supporting one, while the female is the focus for a majority of the flick. Warner Bros. feels it needs a leading lady with the clout to draw an audience on her own, and apparently Jolie is the only girl for them.
Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity might be spurring the hottest catfight known to man; Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively are both vying for the female lead in the director's sci-fi thriller, reports the Heat Vision Blog, which undoubtedly creates all sorts of naughty visions in the heads of fanboys.
This news marks the second time in very recent history that Scarlett Johansson will star alongside Robert Downey Jr. ScarJo was recently seen in John Favreau's Iron Man 2, and is now reportedly leading Alfonso Cuaron's pic Gravity.
Angelina Jolie was originally rumored to star, but now we get ScarJo instead.
Earlier this week we reported that Alfonso Cuarón - famed Mexican director of what is (in my opinion) the best of the Harry Potter series – is directing Gravity, a space thriller starring Robert Downey Jr.
But I fear this project might be thrown off course by recent news of a Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans) project with the same name. While Cuaron`s project seems dramatic yet credible, Leterrier`s seems completely ridiculous:
“Gravity is being described as a disaster film in the vein of The Day After Tomorrow meets Taken. OK. A that`s a weird combination. How do you combine those two films? Here`s how: It`s about a father who has to search for his lost child as the world stops spinning and Earth begins to lose its gravity.”
How are they going to film this? Lots of actors moving around erratically on harnesses? Lots of motion capture and CGI? Will it be like Avatar and Titans on crack?
Ever since blowing away fanboys and cinephiles alike with the one-two punch of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN and CHILDREN OF MEN, Alfonso Cuaron has left us all waiting with baited breath for his next potential masterwork. While whether or not it will be a masterwork won't be known for a long while, the Mexican director's next movie is the outer-space epic GRAVITY. Starting today, fanboys can start their drooling.
Special effects house Framestore has posted a very intriguing update on their official site, basically comparing GRAVITY to AVATAR in terms of the challenge and possible reward involved with tackling the flick. Instead of trying to convey the hopeful message, I'll let the text speak for itself. (Feel like I'm talking about extraterrestrials here...)
"Framestore is about to embark on one of its greatest challenges yet, Gravity is the next Avatar in terms of ambition. There are many innovative and visually stunning aims for this project."
