Quentin Tarantino is currently shooting his next feature, Django Unchained, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and his Spaghetti Western-inspired tale of slavery, revenge and bounty-hunthing in the Antebellum South is on track for a Christmas Day release.  While we'll all be rejoicing at the sight of a new Tarantino joint, that sight will contain two fewer familiar faces, as both Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen have both exited the project.

Yesterday, The Weinstein Company started the hype-building process on Django Unchained by unveiling the first official poster for Quentin Tarantino's latest tale of – amongst other things – revenge, bad language, and violence.  The poster was simple and stylized, evocative and cool, but didn't give much idea of what Django Unchained is actually about.  So, to follow up on that poster, there's now an official synopsis to give an eager public the lowdown on the story.

A pair of photos from the New Orleans set of Django Unchained are now available online to serve as reminders that Christoph Waltz is starring in a new movie for writer-director Quentin Tarantino.  The first of the two images reveals our first look at waltz sporting a costume and a mighty beard as Dr. King Schultz, the German dentist-turned bounty hunter who partners with the titular slave to rescue his wife from a cruel plantation owner in the Antebellum South.

Over a year ago, well before Hugo racked up eleven Oscar nominations and marked the director's successful foray into family entertainment, Martin Scorsese was said to be reteaming with his frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio on The Wolf of Wall Street.  It seemed like just the sort of material into which Scorsese could sink his teeth, but he unexpectedly left the project back in May.  Now, just as unexpectedly, the director of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas is back on board to direct DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Faced with the age-old dilemma between going big or going home, James Cameron will invariably choose to go big, and he'll go so big as to move himself into a new tax bracket.  He most recently went big with Avatar, which became the biggest movie ever (not adjusted for inflation) usurping his previous achievement in bigness, Titanic.  With the fourteen-year record holder for highest grossing movie of all time getting a 3D re-release this April, you bet your ass Cameron's putting all that bigness on jumbo-sized IMAX screens.

Because one seemingly interminable night of bloviating and self-congratulatory pomp just isn't enough, the awards season must span the three months leading up to the Oscar Ceremony in late February.  During those three months, many a critical organization drops their own list of honorees from cinema of the last year, and all of these awards contribute to the narrative of "buzz" for a film or performance film leading up to the Academy Awards.  One such set of honors are the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and today, the nominees for the 18th annual awards were announced, with the winners set to revealed on Sunday, January 29, 2012.

We've got more than a year to wait until The Great Gatsby renders F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel in 3D for the first time in theaters, but Warner Bros has gone ahead and released the first two official images from the film.  Over the last few months, photos from the Sydney, Australia set have shown the central characters of Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Nick Carraway, played respectively by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire in predictably sharp costumes by Catherine Martin, but these stills give a better idea of the film's look, with director Baz Luhrmann cranking up the old school Hollywood glamour on the faces of his exceedingly attractive leads.  Just look at that first image of DiCaprio and Mulligan, with the dramatic lighting, impeccable hairstyles, and promise of melodrama.  This is going to be one handsome movie.
