So The Adventures of Tintin, the first motion capture film from director Steven Spielberg, played at AFI Fest last night to ecstatic reviews and is already popular in all the numerous international territories where it has been playing for weeks.  That makes it even more difficult to wait for the film's Christmas release Stateside, where moviegoers just aren't as familiar with the titular boy-reporter created by cartoonist Herge.  In order to convey exactly the tone of Tintin to American audiences, a new domestic TV spot goes out of its way to drop a critical quote that calls it, "The perfect combination of Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones," two properties that promise swashbuckling good times.

On Tuesday, a new UK trailer for The Adventures of Tintin provided out best look at Steven Spielberg's first 3D motion capture movie (aside from the footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con, anyways), and it was pretty spectacular.  Based on that trailer, the film's  textures are lifelike, the characters are just cartoonish enough to avoid being stranded in the Uncanny Valley, and most importantly the action set-pieces look like ten tons of wonderful, with a certain Looney Tunes craziness to them.  So good was that trailer that another international trailer arrived today, and it's basically just a slight remix of the last one.

Iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg (Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) made his first ever appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Friday, along with equally impressive director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the upcoming Hobbit films), to discuss their new performance capture 3D film The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. The movie is based on the beloved comic books created by Belgian artist Georges “Herge” Remi, and is helmed by Spielberg with Jackson producing, based on a script by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn also features an excellent cast of actors such as Jamie Bell (Jumper), Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Simon Pegg (Paul), Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), and Daniel Craig (Cowboys & Aliens). The 3D spectacular is adapted from three of Remi’s famous stories including The Crab with the Golden Claw, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure, while the screenplay depicts Tintin’s (Bell) first encounter with Captain Haddock (Serkis) and the discovery of a clue to the treasure of his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock.

The notion of canine sidekicks seems to have gone out of fashion as of late, and that's a shame.  After all, where would Dorothy be without Toto?  Who is Superman without Krypto the Superdog?  And who gives a damn about Turner without Hooch?  Luckily for dog-lovers everywhere, in Steven Spielberg's motion capture epic The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Herges globally-beloved Belgian reporter Tintin will assisted by his trusty dog Snowy (so named not for his white fur, but on account of his voracious appetite for a particular Colombian export).  A new image from the film has Tintin and Snowy doing some research in an outmoded artifact that primitive cultures referred to as a "book."

Ahhh, what a relationship the internet enjoyed with the ultimately rejected NBC pilot Wonder Woman, which was written by David E. Kelley and starred Adrianne Palicki.  We laughed at the costume's day-glo mom jeans, then scoffed at subsequent efforts to fix the pants.  With the pilot turned down and lacking a network, we'll have to wait a while before a bootleg version inevitably becomes available, but until then, a review of the unfinished pilot has surfaced online.  The surprisingly positive review includes several images of Palicki in costume, including some never-before-seen star-spangled underoos.

Yesterday we got a double dose of The Adventures of Tintin with international and domestic posters.  Today brings the first look at actual footage from Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, as the official teaser trailer has made its debut.  And teaser is the appropriate word.  Mostly, it's confined to looks at the film's lavishly realized digital environments, with fleeting glimpses at the motion-capture characters.  There's only one solid look at the face of Herge's famous creation, whose physical performance and voice are provided by Jamie Bell.  Don't you want to see what a Spielberg-directed motion-capture adventure looks like?

NBC Kicks 'Wonder Woman' to the Curb

Thursday, 12 May 2011 21:58

We all had a good laugh when the first images of the new Wonder Woman costume debuted, and at the very idea of Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley taking on the first lady of DC Comics.  Now, though, laughter might feel too mocking and self-satisfied, as it turns out that NBC has declined to take the Wonder Woman pilot to series.  According to Entertainment Weekly, we won't be seeing Adrianne Palicki rocking superhero mom jeans in action as Diana Prince anytime soon.

Remember that first image of Adrianne Palicki in costume as everyone's favorite Amazon for NBC's new Wonder Woman series?  If so, then you'll also recall that the costume itself met with no small amount of online derision.  Based on photos taken from filming of the pilot in Los Angeles, NBC took some of the criticisms to heart.  See Wonder Woman.  See Wonder Woman run.  Run, Wonder Woman, run, courtesy of SFX (via Collider)!

Robert Zemeckis, the director who gave us the Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Cast Away, has spent the last decade directing exclusively through performance capture.  Through his motion capture animation studio, ImageMovers, he's directed Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol, as well as producing Monster House and last weekend's Mars Needs Moms.  Zemeckis' next film was intended to be a 3D motion capture remake of The Beatles' triptastic 1968 cartoon Yellow Submarine, but an abysmal opening for Mars Needs Moms has led Disney to cancel their plans to ride the eponymous submersible.

Yesterday, we heard that Elzabeth Hurley had been cast in NBC's Wonder Woman pilot, scoring the role of an evil scientist nemesis to Adrianne Palicki's superpowered Amazonian.  The casting round-up continues today, with Deadline breaking the news that Cary Elwes, best known as Westley in The Princess Bride, has joined the cast as a corporate ally of Diana Themyscira aka Wonder Woman.  Not only that, but the Deadline article also mentions that is also part of the mega-ensemble in Garry Marshall's currently filming Valentine's Day spin-off New Year's Eve.
