The Oscars may not have been a bundle of surprises, but the weekend box office provided a few of its own.  Disney's Gnomeo & Juliet managed to make its way to the first place spot over the pretty-slow Oscar weekend, according to estimates.  After slowly moving into a striking position after debuting in third place, then jumping up to second place last weekend, the animated picture rose to first with $14.2 million over a weekend that apparently stands as the lowest attended late-February weekend in 16 years.  The new Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, underperformed in second place with an estimated $13.4 million, and last week's number one film Unknown dropped 43% to $12.4 million.

It’s always cool when a studio’s marketing department takes an approach to a movie’s poster that isn’t just the standard “floating movie star head”.  Summit Entertainment has obliged with a 3D motion poster for their upcoming actioner Drive Angry 3D, directed by Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine) and starring Nicholas Cage and Amber Heard.  Cage plays a man who breaks out of Hell, bent on revenge.  The man in black you see on the poster is William Fichtner as The Accountant, an agent of the underworld who must capture Cage to balance the underworld’s books.  Check out the poster.

Patrick Lussier’s latest directorial task will feature the ultra versatile (you see what I did there) Nicolas Cage, as he tracks down the men who murdered his daughter in the upcoming Drive Angry 3D.

The film is scheduled for release on February 11, 2011, and if nothing else looks to promise butt loads of action.

The script was written by Lussier and Todd Farmer, and stars Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, Katy Mixon, William Fichtner and David Morse.

Drive Angry 3D

Monday, 26 July 2010 13:31

Synopsis: DRIVE ANGRY stars Nicolas Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon.

He’s joined by Piper (Amber Heard) – a young, sexy waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah King (Billy Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash hell on earth.

But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as “The Accountant” – who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell. With wicked cunning and hypnotic savagery, the Accountant will relentlessly pursue Milton at high speed across the country until his mission is accomplished.

Fueled by high octane and pure rage, Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits to avenge his daughter’s murder, before his last chance at redemption is revoked.

'Breaking Dawn' in 3D?

Monday, 12 July 2010 10:16

Are Twilight fans ready for Breaking Dawn in 3D? Come on, when Robert Pattinson reaches out to Kristen Stewart, he can be reaching out to you! Sounds kinda cheesy, but it just may happen.

Thanks to working with 3D technology in Patrick Lussier's Drive Angry 3D, Summit has definitely expressed interest in continuing the experience. Lussier, (who co-wrote 'Angry' along with Todd Farmer) told MTV news, "They're completely fascinated and intrigued by the technology… I think Summit has been discovering, as they've been seeing the 3-D material and the ease we've been able to work with it, is that it's an incredibly viable format to work in."

Will ‘Breaking Dawn’ really benefit from 3D? There is no doubt fans of the franchise will be lining up to see their favorite vampire romance burst off the screen. Wait a minute? Is that something we really need to see?
