Killing Them Softly is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, that annual cinematic extravaganza on the French Riviera. In advance of the premiere, today we have the very first clip from the new feature by director Andrew Dominik, the man behind the excellent Chopper and The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford.
Way back last May, we saw the first image from Cogan's Trade, starring International Movie Star® Brad Pitt as the title character, Jackie Cogan. Since the protagonist is a professional dealer in violence as a mafia enforcer, Pitt looked appropriately unscrupulous, sporting a greasy sorta-pompadour, tough guy leather jacket, and a giant shotgun.
After months of hearing nothing about film, several new images from the film have emerged online today. One eliminates the threatening shotgun but goes in closer on Pitt's profitably handsome face, while another provides our very first look at Ray Liotta playing the card game that forms the crux of the Cogan's Trade plot. Yet another offers the first look at James Gandolfini wearing some sweet tea-shades.
Opening in theaters on November 4th is the new police drama from Fighting director Dito Montiel called The Son of No One. The film stars an all-star cast of actors including Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Ray Liotta (Cop Land), Katie Holmes (Batman Begins), Tracy Morgan (TV's 30 Rock), and Oscar winners Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) and Al Pacino (Serpico).
IAR's managing editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to sit down and speak with director Dito Montiel about The Son of No One. The director spoke honestly about his new film, its autobiographical subject matter, reuniting with his Fighting star Channing Tatum, casting Tracy Morgan in his first serious role, and directing the great Al Pacino.
Last year, Derek Cianfrance earned a whole lot of accolades for Blue Valentine, a drama that devastatingly juxtaposed the sweet beginnings of a relationship with its inevitable deterioration. It's the sort of film that does exactly what it wants to, providing a cinematic approximation of the emotional clusterfuck that accompanies the cessation of a formerly loving relationship. The leads were perfectly played by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, and for his follow-up,The Place Beyond the Pines, Cianfrance is reteaming with former Mouseketeer Gosling. The first images from the film have made their way online, and they provide the first look at Gosling rocking bleached blond hair, and fellow lead Bradley Cooper getting his run on in a police uniform.
"Hello, I'm Brad Pitt. You might know me better as International Film Star Brad Pitt. In Cogan's Trade, I'll be reteaming with Andrew Dominik, the Australian director with whom I previously worked on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and who also directed the unstoppably kickass Chopper. In the film, I play Jackie Cogan, a mob enforcer investigating a daring heist perpetrated during a mafia-sponsored poker game. Accordingly, in this first image from the film, I've got slicked hair, an untrustworthy goatee, a leather jacket, and a huge shotgun. Take a look."*
The first Street Kings is the only movie you'll see where the protagonist, a rough and tumble cop, takes hearty swigs from a handle of vodka during a shootout. That film took place in Los Angeles, a city that has been well-trod by action-dramas depicting police corruption, but the sequel Street Kings 2: Motor City takes the action to the streets of Detroit. Today, we've got an exclusive first look at a clip from the film, featuring Ray Liotta and Shawn Hatosy sniffing out a suspect.
You may have heard that 50 Cent went method and lost 54 pounds to portray a college football player unexpectedly stricken with cancer in the drama Things Fall Apart, directed by card-carrying badass Mario Van Peebles. Well, now you can see skinny Fiddy in action, as an unofficial trailer for the film has made its way online. I'm going to emphasis that this is an unofficial trailer. If you looked up melodrama in the dictionary, you'd find a definition for the word melodrama, but you can save yourself the trouble by watching the trailer. Also, if you looked up 'terrible movie trailer', you'd find no definition, but again, this unofficial trailer will do the defining for you.
The adaptation of George V. Higgins' novel Cogan's Trade has quite a few things going for it. There's Andrew Dominik, the Australian writer-director who gifted the world with Chopper and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Then there's the cast he's assembled: Jesse James colloboraters Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, and Sam Rockwell, joined by James Gandolfini, Bella Heathcoate, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, and Richard Jenkins. According to THR's Risky Business blog, that rather masculine group will be getting even more testosterone with the addition of Ray Liotta.
