When you think romance, you think of two best friends and CIA agents who discover they're both dating the same woman and subsequently engage in an escalating series of attempts to thwart each other and win her affections, right? Right. In that spirit, 20th Century Fox has announced that This Means War – starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as the CIA agents sublimating their homoerotic feelings into a competition to win Reese Witherspoon – will now hit theaters on February 14th of this year.
Redundant remake news, now. With American Psycho in 2000, co-writer and director Mary Harron managed to adapt a seemingly unadaptable novel while preserving its spirit and a surprising amount of its unsavory content. The film, supported by a remarkable, Tom Cruise-inspired performance from Christian Bale, has aged well; ten years on, its intentional but not overdone 1980's Manhattan and Bale's controlled work allow the scathing satirical comedy to shine through even clearer. But why not remake it anyways?
20th Century Fox has dropped an international trailer for This Means War, an action comedy in which two sexy, globe-trotting CIA agents who regularly engage in gunfights, huge stunts, and the like, discover that they're both dating the same woman. Rather than talk it out or set their desire for her aside for the sake of their long friendship, these two decide to turn said woman into the principal metric for a massive pissing contest, each trying to win her heart whilst sabotaging his rival. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play the spies who are obviously in love with each other, while Reese Witherspoon plays the object of their sublimated homoerotic affections. This international trailer gives a taste for the film's juggling act between broad action and broad comedy, as it includes a few explosions and Hardy getting shot in the nuts with a paintball gun.
Remember the trailer for This Means War, the action-comedy in which Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play CIA agents and best bros who discover that they're dating the same woman, played by Reese Witherspoon? You know, the one where, rather than dealing with the situation like reasonable people with human emotions, they engage in an escalating battle to win her heart, misappropriating what must be thousands and thousands of dollars in elaborate attempts to sabotage each other? That's the one. Today, we have no less than three new images from the film, all over which feature Hardy and Pine dressed like debonair secret agents, and two with Witherspoon in the mix, acting as a living embodiment of their repressed homoerotic relationship (that last part is pure conjecture).
Synopsis: Two best friends and top-level CIA spies suddenly discover that they're both dating and infatuated with the same woman, starting an all-out battle between them to win her heart, using every dirty trick and governmental resource at their disposal.
Imagine for a moment that you and your best bro – your fortress of brotitude, your potassium bromide, your Harlem Bro-betrotter – the both of youse are CIA agents. Not the real-life kind, who mostly spend their lives analyzing data under fluorescent lights or cultivating contacts all over the world, but the movie kind, who hang out in sexily-lit command centers and do lots of kung-fu. You're imagining the lives led by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy in This Means War, the first trailer for which premiered online today. As you'll see, these two secret bro-gents get into an escalating battle of wills and misappropriation of taxpayer resources when they discover they're both dating Reese Witherspoon, leading to an ongoing action-comedy bro-battle that can only end in true bromance. Or death.
The last few weeks have seen big summer movie debuts, with Fast Five pre-emptively cracking open the season and Thor following up with a respectable opening for a an arguably second-tier superhero. With very little competition from other beefy superheroic types, Thor held on to the top spot for a second week, earning an estimated $34.5 million. The big surprise this weekend was Bridesmaids; the raunchy wedding-themed comedy from Kristen Wiig exceeded all expectations in second place, with a projected $24.4 million opening gross.
It's a good year to be an animated film. If studio estimates prove accurate, then 20th Century Fox's Rio will have claimed the top spot for the second week in a row, pulling in a projected $26.8 million over the holiday weekend. Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion, meanwhile, nipped at Rio's animated heels with $25.7 million in estimated receipts. This weekend was the second in a row that has exceeded the grosses from the same weekend last year, with another new release, Water for Elephants, adding $17.5 million to the overall box office.
By all accounts, one of the most anticipated movies scheduled for release this spring is Water for Elephants, based on the extremely popular book by author Sara Gruen. The film, which is directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constatine) and stars Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon (Walk The Line) and, Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), as well as Twilight actor Robert Pattinson, is already gaining early Oscar buzz and it doesn't even hit theaters until April 22nd.
Francis Lawrence has made two feature films, the supernatural thriller Constantine with Keanu Reeves and the apocalyptic event I Am Legend with Will Smith. His next film, Water for Elephants, is an adaptation of the beloved novel by Sara Gruen, and it will test Lawrence's ability handle emotional drama without the action-flavor of his previous efforts. He certainly assembled a game cast to help with the heavy lifting, however, as the film stars Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Christoph Waltz, and Hal Holbrook.
