B.O. Roundup, April 25-27: 'The Other Woman' Hobbles 'Captain America'

A trio of likable blondes took Captain America down a peg or two at the domestic box office.

Basically, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton held the struggling super-soldier by his arms, setting up Cameron Diaz to deliver a devastating kick to his super-solar plexus.

All of which is to say that The Other Woman knocked Captain America: The Winter Soldier from first place at the domestic box office, ending the Marvel sequel's three consecutive weeks at the top of the heap.

The comedy from director Nick Cassavetes debuted in 3,205 locations, earning an estimated $24.7 million and opening in first place by a wide margin.  The Other Woman stars Mann as a wife who discovers that her husband is cheating with two other women.  The three team up, form an unlikely friendship, and set out for revenge.

Audiences showed up for The Other Woman in force.  Unsurprisingly, most of this audience consisted of women.  75%, as a matter of fact, and they tended to like the film a whole lot more than critics.  While this debut is a win for all three lead actresses, it's particularly strong for Diaz, whose comedic efforts have performed well over the last several years.

The Captain America sequel finally settled for second place, bringing in $16.0 million from 3,620 theaters, according to current estimates.  That brings The Winter Soldier's domestic total to $224.8 million, less than half of its $645.1 million global total.

This weekend's other high profile new release, Brick Mansions, opened with an estimated $9.6 million from 2,647 theaters in North America.  An amped up remake of the French actioner District B13, Brick Mansions marks the penultimate performance of Paul Walker, who died tragically in a car accident last November.

With moviegoers reacting strongly to the film, Relativity Media and EuropaCorp's Brick Mansions ought to hold well in the weeks to come.

This weekend's other new wide release, The Quiet Ones, opened in 2,027 locations from which it earned an estimated $4.0 million.  A spooky British thriller, The Quiet Ones didn't receive the same positive CinemaScore exit poll results from audiences pleased with Brick Mansions and The Other Woman.  Don't expect to hear much from this one when summer movie season gets rolling thanks to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 next week.
