B.O. Roundup, May 2-4: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Swings, But Not Too High

As the only new wide release this weekend, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cleaned up in theaters, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier still stands as the biggest opener of 2014 so far.

Spider-Man, the superhero who essentially ushered in the comic book movie boom twelve years ago, has debuted with less than last month's star-spangled Cap sequel, illustrating just how much the blockbuster landscape has changed in the last few years.

With no competition from other new releases, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 kicked off its theatrical run in 4,324 locations in North America, grossing an estimated $92.0 million in the process.

An apples-to-apples comparison with the 2012 reboot isn't easy, since Marc Webb's retelling of Spidey's origin opened for the July 4th holiday, collecting $62 million over the three-day weekend and $137 million over its first six days.  A decade ago, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 opened to $88.1 million, becoming the only one of those first three pictures to debut with less than $100 million.

Sony Pictures has been relentlessly hyping this sequel for months now.  The studio has already scheduled The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 for the summers of 2016 and 2018, and is also whipping up Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs.  Five movies into Spider-Man's cinematic life, though, there's a clear trend of diminishing returns domestically.  Every installment has made less than its predecessor here in the States.

Luckily for Sony, Spider-Man keeps getting more popular abroad.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been playing in many international markets for weeks, and has collected a whopping $277.0 million from 90 markets for a global total of $369.0 million.  Back in 2002, Spider-Man made half of its $821.7 million global total internationally.  By the 2012 reboot, that percentage had jumped up 65%.

Expect an ever greater amount of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's global haul to come from abroad.  It's the biggest release on the books in China, where the sequel is playing on no fewer than 11,002 screens.  With a $6.5 million debut this weekend, Peter Parker's latest adventure is the biggest Hollywood movie in India's box office history.

While Spider-Man 3 proved divisive and the reboot earned a largely lukewarm response, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned the harshest reviews of the franchise.  Still, it ought to hold well with no major blockbuster competition until Godzilla stars stomping and the X-Men come back to town.
