B.O. Roundup, May 23-25: 'X-Men' Mutate Memorial Day Weekend

Mutants ruled the box office over Memorial Day weekend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opened at number one and is expected to zip past $100 million before the three-day holiday weekend is concluded.

According to current estimates, the prequel-sequel debuted to the tune of $90.7 million from 3,996 locations in North America.  That means X-Men: Days of Future Past is the fourth-biggest opening of 2014 so far, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Godzilla, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Going in to the weekend, 20th Century Fox was hoping that the latest X-Men would set a new record for the 14-year-old franchise, but the biggest opening of this series remains X-Men: The Last Stand, a maligned installment that nonetheless coasted on X2's reputation to open with $102.8 million over Memorial Day weekend in 2006.

With original helmer Bryan Singer back and Hugh Jackman leading a cast combining longtime franchise players with the gang from 2011's well-received prequel X-Men: First Class, though, X-Men: Days of Future Past restored some commercial luster to the X-series.  It was a big debut over First Class's $55.1 million debut and The Wolverine's $53.1 million bow last summer.

In a week, it will pass The Wolverine as the biggest domestic earner in the franchise's history, but it's already cleaning up around the world.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opened in 118 countries other than the USA, and the time travel adventure grossed a whopping $171.1 million from those countries, doing particularly well in China, where it earned $37.7 million.

Stateside, the only other wide release this weekend was Blended, the comedy reuniting The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates duo Adam Sandler and Drew BarrymoreBlended opened in third place behind last weekend's champ Godzilla and only a wee bit ahead of Neighbors.  The comedy debuted to an estimated $14.2 million from 3,555 locations.

Blended marks a trend of diminishing returns for Sandler, so long a reliable blockbuster comedy leading man.  In fact, family-friendly Blended opened not much bigger than the 2012 R-rated calamity That's My Boy, which earned $13.5 million.  While pairing Sandler and Barrymore again was expected to give Blended some extra juice, the film opened to smaller numbers than recent Sandler joints like Jack & Jill, Grown-Ups 2, and Just Go With It.

In limited release, meanwhile, Jon Favreau's indie Chef expanded from 72 to 498 locations nationwide and cracked the top ten in the process, bringing in an estimated $2.2 million.
