B.O. Roundup, July 11-13: 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Opens to $73 Million

Caesar and his ape compatriots came howling into theaters this weekend, making Dawn of the Planet of the Apes the biggest movie at the weekend box office by a wide margin.

Back in 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes proved that this storied sci-fi franchise had plenty of gas left in its narrative and commercial tank.  The sequel, directed by Matt Reeves, ditches the human cast of the last installment but retains the most important elements: Andy Serkis and Weta Digital, the forces behind Caesar.

Audiences hailed the hyper-intelligent ape's return.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened in first place with an estimated $73.0 million from 3,967 theaters in North America.

That's a big leap from its predecessor, a 33% bigger debut than the $54.8 million raked in by surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the continued success of which on home formats helped out Dawn immensely.  Exceptionally strong reviews and some impressive visual effects also contributed to this box office bumper crop for Fox.

Just under 18% of that $73.0 million was raked in on Thursday night thanks to 10 pm and midnight screenings.  36% meanwhile, came from extra-pricey 3D ticket sales.

Richard Linklater's ambitious drama Boyhood, filmed over the course of more than a decade, finally opened in just five theaters, from which it earned an estimated $359,000.  That tremendous per-theater average of $71.8 million bodes well for Boyhood as it expands next week.

Transformers: Age of Extinction, meanwhile, is now officially the biggest movie of 2014 so far thanks to another gangbusters weekend internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $752.5 million.

At home, though, the overall box office trend was down in comparison to the same weekend last year, when Despicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2, and Pacific Rim duked it out.

Here are the top ten movies in America for the weekend of July 11:
