Box Office Roundup: January 28 - 30, 2011 Anthony Hopkins' 'The Rite' is #1

The King’s Speech had an impressive weekend. The highly praised film earned 41% more this weekend at the box office, likely due to the twelve Academy Award nominations that it received this past Tuesday. True Grit also managed to make 4% more over the weekend, which is especially impressive as it dropped out of 350 theatres since last week.

The number one movie over the weekend was Anthony Hopkins’ exorcism thriller, The Rite, with about $15 million. The weeks other new release, the Jason Statham/Ben Foster flick The Mechanic opened in the #3 spot with around $12 million. Last week’s #1 movie, No Strings Attached managed a strong second weekend with only a 30% drop. It was enough to earn the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy the #2 spot with $13.7 million.

Once again, Black Swan and The Fighter managed solid weekend numbers which could very well carry on until the Oscars’ are announced on February 27, 2011.
