B.O. Roundup, September 27-29: 'Cloudy 2' Leads the Pack

Between new wide releases Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Don Jon, Baggage Claim, and Rush, the last weekend of September was a big stew, offering a little something for every palette.

Of those four movies, the animated sequel emerged atop the box office heap, with fellow new releases and holdover Prisoners rounding out the top five.  Overall, it was a reasonably strong weekend at the box office, marking an uptick from the same frame last year.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 opened in a whopping 4,001 locations, from which it earned an estimated $35.0 million.  The sequel easily surpassed the $30.3 million debut of its popular 2009 predecessor, which went on to collect $124.8 million domestically.

So Cloudy 2's opening is nothing to sneeze at, but did fall short of the $40 million to $45 million that was being projected on the way into this weekend. Sony Pictures Animation was doubtless hoping to set another record after Hotel Translyvania became the biggest September debut to the tune of $42.5 million a year ago.  While this foodimal-infused follow-up didn't quite crack that lofty goal, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 does stand at fourth on the all-time September openings list, behind Hotel Transylvania, this month's Insidious Chapter 2, and 2002's Sweet Home Alabama.

Last week's number one movie, the intense drama Prisoners, declined 45% and dropped to second place.  Rush, the Ron Howard Formula 1 racing chronicle opened in five theaters last week, leaped up to number three as it expanded to a nationwide release.  The film, which is based on a true story, earned an estimated $10.3 million from 2,297 theaters.

Baggage Claim, a romantic comedy starring Paula Patton as a flight attendant in search of a fiance, opened in fourth place.  Playing in 2,027 locations, Baggage Claim brought in $9.3 million according to current estimates.  Nipping at its heels in fifth place is Don Jon, the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  The unique relationship comedy debuted to an estimated $9.0 million from 2,422 locations, with a strong critical response, enthusiastic word of mouth, and date-night appeal all expected to ensure Don Jon's staying power.

Outside of the top ten, narrative-concert-movie hybrid Metallica Through the Never rolled out on 305 IMAX screens, earning an estimated $1.6 million in the process.  This coming Friday, Through the Never will loses those IMAX screens, but will also expand to 650 conventional theaters.
