While comic book adaptations have been inescapably prevalent at multiplexes everywhere for the last decade, they haven't had the same cachet on television.  With The Walking Dead proving successful for AMC, though, televised comic book takes could very well get their chance to shine.  FX is currently prepping a pilot of Powers, the superheroic riff on police procedurals from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming.  According to Deadline, British actress Lucy Punch has signed on to play female lead Detective Deena Pilgrim.

Jay Roach Spotlight: Creating a Strong Story

Tuesday, 18 January 2011 11:04

Jay Roach is one of the most talented directors in Hollywood. He has an uncanny ability to turn something tragic into laugh out loud humor. This is especially evident in his latest feature Dinner for Schmucks starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. Schmucks is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.

Dinner for Schmucks is the hilarious tale of discovering the good in somebody no matter how hard it is to find. Steve Carell stars, alongside Paul Rudd, with an incredibly versatile cast to back them up. This talented group includes Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, Lucy Punch and many more.

Director Jay Roach (The Austin Powers Franchise, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers) injects a lot of heart to this remake of the 1998 French film Le diner de cons. Jay knows comedy and he understands that tragedy and heartbreak can benefit from humor. He does this especially well in Schmucks, thanks to Carell’s wonderfully insane character.

One comedy that stood out this year is Dinner for Schmucks. Based on the 1998 French farce Le dîner de cons (The Dinner Game) - Jay Roach directs this comedy starring Steve Carell along with a cast of lovable crazies with strange talents all their own.

Tim (Paul Rudd) is a rising executive who “succeeds” in finding the perfect guest, IRS employee Barry (Carell), for his boss’ monthly event, a so-called “dinner for idiots,” which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon.

Remakes vs. Original Films

Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:43

Remakes have become one of the most vilified forms of movie-making for many fans. As a loyal fan of horror films especially, many times the remakes seem to be soulless carbon copies of something that was once fresh and oddly entertaining, see The Fog or When a Stranger Calls.

While there was a time when somebody remaking a motion picture was a rarity, it was never a question as to why do something different with familiar material. Both John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) and Phillip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) were terrific films that have since garnered respect in their own rights. In many ways one could argue that both ‘Invasion’ and ‘Thing’ are better than the ones proceeding.
