As is usually the case a week before the Super Bowl, this weekend didn't see citizens trooping to their local multiplex in force.

It was a quiet weekend at the domestic box office, allowing Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters to ride its premise to a number one debut, while a few awards season favorites stayed strong, and Jason Statham's latest suggested that perhaps audiences are growing tired of seeing the actor playing gruff in action vehicles.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Friday, 18 January 2013 11:16

Synopsis: Catching up with Hansel and Gretel 15 years after the traumatic incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into vengeful bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them.

The Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress who is planning to sacrifice many local children at the witches’ gathering during the upcoming ‘Blood Moon’ night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer who has taken power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

Earlier this week, we saw two Russian TV spots for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.  Now, we've got a full trailer that is more our speed for two reasons.  First, it's in English.  Second, it's red band, meaning we get some English expletives.

After a pretty extensive delay, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters arrives in theaters at the end of this month.  What better way to whet your appetite for the goofy action-horror-fairy tale than with a pair of international TV spots containing not even a hint of English?

Remember the ten-disc Blu-ray set collecting Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers?  The one that was supposed to be part of this holiday buying frenzy before a lawsuit delayed the September street date?  Yeah, that one.  It's now set for April, and will be accompanied by Marvel Studios' "Phase Two," along with previously unseen special features.

After Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol reinvigorated the action franchise four movies in and grossed $694 million globally, it was obvious that Tom Cruise would once again do some vertigo-inducing stunt work in a fifth turn as Ethan Hunt.  The big question then became just who would become the fifth Mission: Impossible movie director.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions may just have figured that out, as Christopher McQuarrie is reportedly the top choice to handle Mission: Impossible 5.

After hitting a series low in the midst of its star's overexposure with Mission: Impossible III, the franchise based on a series seemingly none of its audience has seen hit an upswing with last year's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.  As Tom Cruise prepares to attempt another franchise launch with December's Jack Reacher, he's talking vaguely about the next adventure of Ethan Hunt.

What if, after their brush with death at the hands of a witch in a candy house, Hansel and Gretel grew up to be a pair of leather-clad predators slaying sorceresses across Europe in the 19th century?  That's the idea behind Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the sibling duo.  A new red band trailer does most of the same things as the first trailer, but adds in some exploding bodies, while a poster goes less bloody.
