Opening in theaters nationally on May 24th is the new drama What Maisie Knew, which is based on the popular book of the same name by Henry James. The film was helmed by the directorial team of Scott McGehee and David Siegel (Bee Season), and features an all-star cast that includes Academy Award-nominee Julianne Moore (The English Teacher), Alexander Skarsgard (Disconnect), Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder), and newcomer Onata Aprile. 

IAR's New York correspondent Dana Gardner recently had the pleasure of sitting down with both Alexander Skarsgard and Onata Aprile to talk about their work on What Maisie Knew. Aprile discussed how she prepared for her role, improvising, learning her lines, and continuing acting as she gets older, while Skarsgard talked about what attracted him to the project, being a fan of Henry James' novel, the film's impressive cast, the importance of finding the right person to play Maisie, working with a child actress, playing a different character than his role on True Blood, and what he want's to be when he grows up. 

Musician, activist, and adventurer Ziggy Marley may be the son of a musical legend, and the member of a reggae dynasty, but he is also paving a brand new trail for himself. Not with a guitar … but instead with a motorbike!

Marley, the oldest son of reggae icon Bob Marley and also leader of the musical group Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, is featured in the new documentary film - Marley African Road Trip, which became available on DVD May 7th. In 1980, Bob Marley traveled to South Africa with his family to perform a landmark concert to celebrate the independence of Zimbabwe. Thirty years later, Ziggy, along with his brothers Rohan and Robbie, return to South Africa on motorcycles and travel across the country to continue their father’s legacy and put on a concert in his name. The journey was captured and documented by filmmaker David Alexanian, best known for his road trip series - Long Way Round starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, which featured the two friends’ motorcycle journey from London to New York.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with reggae royalty Ziggy Marley about Marley African Road Trip and his South African adventures. The musician turned adventurer discussed the new film, working with documentary director David Alexanian, having this part of his life filmed, his love for motorcycles, going on a road trip with his brothers, his journey across South Africa, continuing his father’s legacy, and how reggae music has changed over the years. 

Noah Baumbach is one of the most interesting and creative writer/directors working in cinema today and his new film Frances Ha, which opens in theaters on May 17th, proves it!

Baumbach first gained attention as a writer and director in the mid-‘90s for a string of independent movies including Kicking and Screaming, Highball, and Mr. Jealousy. But it was his 2005 film The Squid and the Whale that earned him an Academy Award-nomination for Best Original Screenplay and put him on the map in Hollywood as an important filmmaker. 

Since then, Baumbach has collaborated with equally eclectic filmmaker Wes Anderson to pen two of the director’s best movies, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, in addition to co-writing last summer’s hit family film Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted with director Eric Darnell. He also went on to make two more movies as a filmmaker including Margot at the Wedding with Nicole Kidman and Jack Black, as well as the critically acclaimed Greenberg starring Ben Stiller. 

His new film, Frances Ha, features quirky young actress Greta Gerwig as a 27-year-old dancer named Frances who lives with her best friend Sophie (Mickey Sumner). But when Sophie moves out in order to live with her new boyfriend, Frances’ world spins out of control and the young dancer is forced to figure out how to live her life without the constant companionship of her best friend. Baumbach co-wrote the screenplay with Gerwig, who gives an impressive and commanding performance. While the film was shot digitally in color, it was was converted to black-and-white to emulate other New York set movies by classic filmmakers like Woody Allen, and Jim Jarmusch.
