IAR Blu-ray Preview: 'Iron Man 3'

Monday, 23 September 2013 09:57

When Tony Stark watches a movie in his workshop or upstairs in his palatial Malibu mansion, you can bet your ass he doesn't settle for 720p.

No, Iron Man most assuredly laser-pops some popcorn and settles down with Pepper Potts to enjoy a movie in the 1080p high definition splendor afforded by Blu-ray.  He'll be firing up his arc-reactor-powered home entertainment system this week, because Iron Man 3 arrives on two-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack and three-disc 3D Blu-ray this Tuesday, September 24th.

Sex Addiction is no joke. That doesn't mean, however, that Thanks for Sharing can't treat the subject with a little humor.

Opening in theaters today, Thanks for Sharing is the feature directorial debut of Stuart Blumberg, who earned an Academy Award nomination as the co-writer of The Kids Are All Right

For his first feature, Blumberg has assembled a tremendous ensemble cast that reunites him with Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) and also boasts the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man 3), Tim Robbins (Mystic River), Josh Gad (The Internship), Joely Richardson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), and Alecia Moore, aka Pink, in her most substantial film role to date.

Co-written by Blumberg and Matt Winston, Thanks for Sharing is an ensemble comedy-drama centered around three men grappling with sex addiction.  Adam (Ruffalo) is dealing with his first serious relationship in years, afraid of revealing his addiction to Phoebe (Paltrow), the woman with whom he's falling in love.  Adam's sponsor Mike (Robbins) has been successfully dealing with his sexual compulsion for fifteen years, but his discipline complicates his relationships with his wife (Richardson) and son (Fugit), coping with an addiction of his own.  Finally there's Neil (Gad), who loses his job because of his public shenanigans, leading him into a program where he forms an odd couple friendship with Dede (Moore), another recovering sex addict.

IAR was on hand for the recent Los Angeles press conference, during which director Blumberg and stars Paltrow, Robbins, Moore, and Gad enthusiastically discussed Thank for Smoking's unique blend of comedy and drama, working with Ruffalo, what attracted them to the subject matter, their own addictions, and the indispensability of community.

The Friday the 13th franchise caters to the timeless interests of the lizard brain, delivering nudity and ludicrously gruesome kills in nearly equal measure.

Thanks to Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection on Blu-ray, you can tickle the primitive part of your brain with all twelve theatrical entries in the evergreen horror series, many of which are available in high definition for the first time.

Monday, 09 September 2013 09:12

The final frontier is in your hands now.  Or, rather, the final frontier is now in your living room.

IAR Blu-ray Preview: 'Now You See Me'

Monday, 02 September 2013 10:48

"The closer you look, the less you see," says Jesse Eisenberg as master illusionist J. Daniel Atlas in Now You See Me.

Atlas is doubtless correct about his profession, in which sleight of hand, cleverness, and artful misdirection ensure that the audience is never quite looking in the right place.  He's right about magic, but wrong about his movie on Blu-ray.  With Now You See Me arriving in high-definition this week, the closer you look at this fun, fast-paced thriller, the more you'll see.

IAR Blu-ray Preview: 'Pain & Gain'

Monday, 26 August 2013 09:54

Daniel Lugo, the musclebound hero of Pain & Gain, believes in fitness.  He's all about maximizing his potential.

And Lugo would be proud of the totally ripped Pain & Gain Blu-ray arriving on shelves nationwide this Tuesday, August 27th.  This disc will give your home entertainment system a workout that will leave it sore, blasting the sound system and making the HD television look more ripped than ever before.

As of today, the first theatrical adventure of The Muppets is available for the first time in high definition, with The Muppet Movie: Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition arriving on Blu-ray.

In 2011, director James Bobin brought Kermit and company back to theaters where they belong with The Muppets.  Next year, Bobin strikes again with March's Muppets Most Wanted, but thanks to The Muppet Movie finally arriving on Blu-ray, you can go back to the theatrical source.

We're talking about The Muppets as puppeteered by Jim Henson himself, along with Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, and Dave Goelz.  In an age prior to CGI, these Muppet-making geniuses pushed the boundaries of their craft, presenting The Muppets as they'd never been seen before; Kermit riding a bike believably represented an incredible technical achievement.

IAR Blu-ray Preview: 'Oblivion'

Tuesday, 06 August 2013 10:14

As Jack Harper in Oblivion, Tom Cruise has one of the coolest houses ever to grace the screen.  Sitting thousands of feet above Earth, the home in question is a dream of technological slickness poised against a backdrop of clouds.  It even has a pool and a landing pad for Cruise's equally cool bubbleship.

Now that Oblivion is available on Blu-ray, you can hang out in this immeasurably high-gloss pad from your own home.

If you've ever wanted to bring the world's fiercest modern warriors into your home, then prepare to yell, "Go Joe" and fight Cobra from your own couch.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation comes to Blu-ray in 2D and 3D this Tuesday, July 30th, bringing the war between the Joes and their nefarious enemies to multiple platforms in high definition.
