SDCC 2014: 'Pixels' First Look: Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage, and Josh Gad Strutting

Almost a year before the movie hits theaters and it's already obvious that Peter Dinklage steals Pixels.

The first image from the high concept comedy reveals Adam Sandler, Michelle Monaghan, and Josh Gad, but of course it's Dinklage rocking a feathered hairdo that grabs your attention.

Pixels  is inspired by a 2010 French short film by Patrick Jean in which a colorful pixel cloud morphs into classic 8-bit video game characters and icons, slowly pixellating the entire planet.  The charming two-and-a-half-minute short is included in full at the bottom of this page.

The movie version pumps everything up to Sandlerian summer movie levels, imposing a pretty strange narrative on the basic idea.  Basically, aliens get the wrong idea when they get a look at some eighties videogames, misinterpreting them as a declaration of war and attacking New York with their own pixel army inspired by the games.

In order to save the world, the President (Sandler's buddy and frequent collaborator Kevin James) calls upon Sam Brenner (Sandler), an arcade champ who previously shtupped the First Lady (Jane Krakowski).  Brenner, in turn, recruits Dinklage, his former video game nemsis, and Gad, a conspiracy-theory-obsessed gamer.  The great Monaghan, meanwhile, plays a weapons developer who will, of course, be relegated to Sandler's love interest.

This first look image debuted in the pages of Entertainment Weekly (by way of Film Divider) as part of the magazine's Comic-Con preview issue.

Pixels will have a presence in San Diego next weekend as part of the Sony Pictures panel.  This year, Sony's eschewing Hall H in favor of the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel next Thursday, July 24th at 12:30pm.  The presentation, which will also include a panel for Goosebumps starring Jack Black, will apparently offer the chance for a lucky Con attendee to win an actual appearance in Pixels.

That lucky so and so will join a cast that also includes Brian Cox and Ashley Benson.

Sandler, whose commercial appeal has been cooling a bit recently, takes a break from working with his regular directors.  This time, he's directed by Chris Columbus, the Goonies screenwriter who directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Home Alone, Rent, Adventures in Babysitting, and Mrs. Doubtfire.

Pixels is scheduled to open nationwide on May 15, 2015.
