SDCC 2014: 'Sinister Six' Set for November 2016 Followed by 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' in May 2018

Sony has clarified its plans for the Spider-Man franchise.

The studio has scheduled the villainous spinoff The Sinister Six for November 11, 2016.  The Amazing Spider-Man 3, originally announced for summer 2016, has been delayed two years to May 2018.

As you probably remember from last summer's announcement, May 2018 was originally meant to find The Amazing Spider-Man 4 hitting theaters, with the third installment scheduled for June 2016.

That was before this summer's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got knocked around by critics and became the lowest-grossing of all five Spidey movies.  After Sony's aggressive hype and public declarations of a $1 billion+ global haul, the studio ended up with some non-literal egg on its figurative face.

For the last two months, we've had little to no idea how Sony would rejigger their plans for a crossover franchise universe.  One rumor suggested that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would be delayed until some point in 2017.  After Roberto Orci revealed that he's no longer co-writing the sequel, it sounded like the plan was completely up in the air.

Now it's clear that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man won't swing in his own movie for another four years.  At this point, it's unclear whether Marc Webb remains on board The Amazing Spider-Man 3.  Prior to the last sequel's release, Webb talked plenty about his plans for his third go-around, but with the June 2016 release date out the window, who knows if Webb's still involved.

But Spider-fans are still in for a Spidey-related movie in 2016 thanks to The Sinister Six, the all-star villainous team-up from writer-director Drew Goddard.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goddard has a "rough script" in place, but just which villains are included is a mystery.

So far, the rebooted franchise has introduced The Lizard (Rhys Ifans), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), as well as (sort of) Black Cat (Felicity Jones) and Alistair Smythe (B.J. Novak).  Of those, only DeHaan's Harry Osborn is a safe bet, since he was putting together the team at the non-conclusion of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Goddard, who directed and co-wrote The Cabin in the Woods, was set to direct The Martian for 20th Century Fox and act as showrunner on Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil series.  When he suddenly pulled out of both projects to focus on The Sinister Six, it seemed likely that Sony was shifting focus to the villainous team-up.

"With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” said president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Doug Belgrad today.

So we finally have a few answers as to the cinematic future of Peter Parker, but of course, there are even more questions.  Stay tuned for a more solid 2018 date for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and some word on what's up with Venom, the spinoff to be directed by Alex Kurtzman.
