SDCC 2014: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Con Poster Sticks It to the Man

The symbol of the uprising is put to good use on this Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 poster whipped up especially for Comic-Con.

Last year, one of the most talked-about panels in San Diego was Lionsgate's dog and pony show for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  Since that sequel went on to become the biggest domestic hit of 2013 (Iron Man Three, Frozen, and Despicable Me 2 all made more globally), anticipation for Mockingjay is astronomical already.

So much so that Lionsgate won't have a Hall H presentation for the second The Hunger Games entry directed by Francis Lawrence.  Rather than going whole hog and trotting out the Con-friendly cast, the studio is keeping its hype-building effort largely digital this year.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 teaser trailer, for example, won't be rapturously received by an adoring crowd of thousands, but will instead be available via a specific smartphone and at locations of a specific nationwide electronics superstore.*

As a consolation to every fan of Suzanne Collins's novels who was hoping to see Jennifer Lawrence live and in-person, there's this Con-specific poster.  It's very much in keeping with the teasery Panem propaganda, like the quick trailers in which President Snow addresses the citizenry directly.  It's the work of W.K. Interact, who gives it s street art aesthetic that's eye-catching but thematically confused.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 opens in theaters this November 21st, followed by Mockingjay - Part 2 a year later on November 20, 2015.

This penultimate installment in the crazy-popular dystopian franchise finds the Districts openly rebelling after the events of Catching Fire.  Katniss Everdeen, now a part of the uprising centered in District 13, finds herself navigating yet another political minefield as the revolution's leader, President Alma Coin, attempts to use the highly symbolic Tribute to her own ends.  It's all a frustration for our heroine, who wants to infiltrate the Capitol in order to rescue poor Peeta Mellark.

Lawrence is back as Katniss, along with series veterans Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Stanley Tucci, Jeffrey Wright, Jena Malone, Toby Jones, Willow Shields, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Donald Sutherland.  Joining the party this time are Julianne Moore and Natalie Dormer.
