SDCC 2014: Iron Man & Scarlet Witch Go Nuts in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Concept Art

Marvel Studios has created a perfect storm of anticipation for its Comic-Con presentation.

Just today, the reigning champ of crossover comic book franchises rolled out posterized concept art for Ant-Man and announced a May 3, 2018 release date for a mystery movie that's probably Avengers 3.

Now, in an unprecedented bit of hype happenstance (hypenstance™), Robert Downey Jr. is discussing the possibility of Iron Man 4 and Iron Man's kicking ass alongside Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in two bits of concept art from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

After finishing up his original contract with Iron Man Three, Downey Jr. is currently set to appear in two Avengers sequels but no more solo Tony Stark adventures.  That could change, however, as the highest paid actor out there tells Entertainment Weekly, “It’s down to Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] and Ike [Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment] and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that’s on us to agree or disagree.  When things are going great, there’s a lot of agreement.”

“Right now, this has just been swell, hasn’t it?" he continued, referring to Age of Ultron. “This has been a really good one and it feels good and we’re having a good time.”

“It’s that thing of: Why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed?” he says—then adds a caveat. “Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out," Downey Jr. summed up. "The future is, as usual, uncertain.”

Regardless of whether these public negotiations lead to a fourth Iron Man starring Downey Jr., we'll still see him rocking a razor-sharp goatee next May 1, 2015.  In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are getting tired of saving the world since the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D.  To give them a break and oversee his Iron Legion of drones, Stark creates Ultron, an artificial intelligence who promptly decides that the only way to save the planet is to wipe out humanity.

That means superhero-on-Iron-Legion action like what you can see in the concept art below:

Hawkeye's arrows zipping through drone skulls is a nice touch, isn't it?

Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, is battling 'bots in this bit of concept art, but she and her super-speedy brother Quicksilver aka Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) don't spend the whole movie aligned with Tony Stark and company.

"They're on Team Ultron, which makes things really hard for  the Avengers because all of sudden they’re dealing with powers that they’re not used to," Joss Whedon explained last week. "With the [first] Avengers, everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody, and now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot [Ultron] who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it's a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in."
