IAR INTERVIEW: Tyrese Gibson Talks 'Fast & Furious 7'

The Fast and the Furious film series is the most successful franchise in Universal Studios history having grossed over $2 billion worldwide, and the most recent installment, Fast & Furious 6, is the highest-grossing of the films so far having earned $788 million at the box office. So it only makes sense that the studio would fast track a seventh installment that is currently filming and is entitled Fast & Furious 7, which is scheduled to drive into theaters on July 11th, 2014.

Due to the film's quick turnaround, director Justin Lin, who has helmed the series ever since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, had to step down, while Insidious: Chapter 2 director James Wan has taken over. Returning franchise stars include Vin DieselPaul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, and Lucas Black, who finally reprises his role from Tokyo Drift. They are joined by series newcomers Kurt Russell, Tony Jaa, Djimon Hounsou, Ronda Rousey, and Jason Statham, who's villainous character was teased in the previous movie's end credit scene.

Earlier today I had the pleasure of speaking with actor Tyrese Gibson about his work on Fast & Furious 7, while he was promoting his upcoming holiday film Black Nativity, which hits theaters on November 27th. The talented hip-hop star turned actor discussed filming Fast & Furious 7, what the franchise means to him, new addition Jason Statham, Statham and Dwayne Johnson's fight scene, the quick production turnaround, and working with director James Wan

Here is what Tyrese Gibson had to say about Fast & Furious 7:

IAR: How’s filming going on Fast & Furious 7?

Tyrese Gibson: Man, listen. I’m so lucky to be a part of this franchise with Dwayne Johnson. Jason Statham is part of the family now. It’s almost like the best way to say it is that I can’t believe they are paying us to have this much fun. It’s unbelievable man. I was filming yesterday and Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson were on set doing this big fight scene and it’s just unbelievable to be playing on that level.

How has it been working with director James Wan who is taking over for Justin Lin?

Gibson: He’s doing his thing man. I feel bad about the turn-around time. You can’t prep a movie this big as fast as they dumped it in his lap but I think at the end of the day God will never give you too much that you can’t handle. We’re all becoming baby mad scientists and kind of picking everything apart to just help move the needle forward. He’s doing his thing man. He’s going to surprise a lot of people with how he just stepped in and he’s doing his thing.

Fast & Furious 7 is scheduled for release on July 11th, 2014.
