IAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Tyrese Gibson talks 'Luke Cage' and a 'Fast Five' Sequel

It seems that almost every actor in Hollywood wants to play Marvel’s Luke Cage on the big screen. Director John Singleton has been attached to helm the film for a while now and has previously stated that he would like to cast his Four Brothers star Tyrese Gibson as the Hero For Hire. But recently several other popular actors have thrown their hats into the ring. We brought you news last month that while at a press conference for Marvel Studios summer blockbuster Thor, actor Idris Elba, who will also soon be seen in Marvel’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, said that he’d “like a stab at Luke Cage at some point.” Then just a few weeks ago, actor Isaiah Mustafa, who is most famous for his role in the Old Spice commercials, released a fan-made video featuring him in the lead as the wrongly imprisoned convict-turned superhero. But since there has been no movement on the proposed Luke Cage film for sometime, it makes you wonder if Singleton and Gibson are still planning to bring the hero formally-known-as Power Man to the big screen.

I recently had a chance to speak with actor Tyrese Gibson, who is having one hell of a summer between his best selling book “How To Get Out Of Your Own Way,” his box office smash Fast Five, and his upcoming film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which hits theaters on June 29th. I took the opportunity to ask Gibson about Luke Cage and if playing the Marvel character was something he was still planning to do. “Yeah man. I’ve been interested in that project and have been keeping my eyes on it for years,” replied Gibson. “Marvel just has to make Luke Cage a priority. Marvel has to make this movie a priority man. Everybody wants to see Luke Cage. The fans have been talking about it forever. They have to do it for the fans,” the actor continued. “I see what they are doing with Green Lantern and all these other films, that’s great but they need to step it up on Luke Cage. It’s time to get this thing going and I’m ready. I got my headband ready, my muscles are ready, and I’m ready for Luke Cage. Marvel has to get ready. Marvel has to step it up and get this movie written and done so that we can go into production on it. The time is now.”

I followed up by asking him if he still hopes to work with director John Singleton on the project. “Oh absolutely I hope John directs it. But John has to still be excited about it too if you know what I mean. Its like so many years have gone by and everybody is kind of in a different place right now,” Gibson said. I continued by asking the actor what he likes most about the character of Luke Cage. “I just relate to his strength as a leading man with the history that he has. I like his story, the layers. It’s his character. It’s not just blowing up shit and fighting people, you know? I can relate to that guy a lot.”

I also asked Gibson about the possibility of a sequel to the extremely successful Fast Five? “Yeah, yeah, there is a lot of talk floating around right now. It could happen,” he confirmed. I followed up by asking him if returning once again to the franchise was something that he would be interested in doing. “You know what, with everything I do the timing is everything. As well as in general making sure that it makes sense. I would love to do number six but I want the script to be special. I want to come in and just make sure I’m doing something that is going to impact the people. So if they line all the ducks up in a row, I’ll definitely entertain the idea of coming back for sure,” Gibson said. “It’s always good to work on something that has the fans that can show up and support. There’s nothing like it, it’s the best feeling ever.”

Finally, in closing Tyrese Gibson had this to say to Marvel about making a Luke Cage film. “Here is my message to Marvel. Make Luke Cage a priority! The fans are waiting. It’s time to do this, and the time is now!” As a long time fan of the character from the comics … I couldn’t agree more.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens in theaters on June 29th.
