One-on-one with Chloe Moretz, who 'Kicks Ass'!

Chloe Moretz is smart, charming and has a resume that many seasoned professionals would hope for.

She appeared in The Amitiyville Horror along with Ryan Reynolds and she even gave Joseph Gordon-Levitt a hard time in (500) Days of Summer. But that was nothing…

Then there was “Hit-Girl”; the foul-mouthed, violence prone killer in Kick-Ass (out on DVD and Blu-Ray August 3rd) Chloe took on the character with amazing energy and delight. So much so that this iconic character has become a staple costume at Comic Con, with men, women and children donning the wig and cape.

But nobody ‘kicks ass’ like Chloe. She recently took on the controversial role of Abby in Let Me In, the remake, of sorts to Let the Right One In. And she is also working with the great Martin Scorsese as well, in Hugo Cabret.

Recently, iamROGUE spoke to Ms. Moretz and found her to be delightful. She is a busy actress as she continues to challenge herself with a variety of roles. My guess, she’ll be an Academy Award winner before she turns sixteen.

What was the experience like for you to see boys and girls dressed as your character “Hit Girl”?

It was pretty insane. I saw this really gigantic man in the hit girl wig and costume, so that was pretty insane. But it was really, really great seeing people, you know, the true fans of Kick-Ass.

Are you surprised that this has become as big as it has?

Well, you always hope for your films to be big and do really well, but you never really know. I’m so blessed that the film did so well and that everyone really loved my character. It’s great.

You certainly stole the movie.

Oh, thank you so much.

You’re welcome. The thing is, you are working opposite Nicolas Cage who has been in the business for years, and you stole it from him.

Ohhhh! Thank you so much. I love Nic, and he gave me so much to work off of, and he really helped me make my role what it is.

You had some terrific moments with both he and Aaron [Johnson]. It was great fun to see all of you work together.

Oh, thank you so much. I’m really happy to hear that.

With the Blu-ray and DVD release, how much did you get involved in the making of it when it comes to features? This thing is really loaded!

It totally is. I mean, I’m pretty sure there are a lot of extras of me training and doing some crazy stuff. And that part, that was all me and you can see my training process.

How hard did you have to work? How many hours days were you training?

I worked for about six months on doing the role of “Hit-Girl” and getting ready for all the crazy action stuff. We worked really hard, and as I said, it was almost all me, but all the crazy flips and running up the wall wasn’t me, but almost 90% of it was me.

Now I have to ask, because there is a lot of talk about the sequel. What do you know and what can you say about it?

All I know, honestly, right now Matthew Vaughn is shooting X-Men: First Class and there is another comic book. I would love to do a second Kick Ass but no one knows, we have our fingers crossed but it’s’ all up to Matthew.

There certainly are a lot of places you could go with that character. Have you thought about where you’d like to go with it? Yeah, I’ve thought about making “Hit-Girl” older and more knowing but at some point, of course, you’ve gotta have her get the guns and knives and go to work.

Absolutely! Absolutely! And now you are working with freakin’ Martin Scorcese [in Hugo Cabret]…

[Laughing]

How has that experience been?

It’s truly amazing, he’s such an amazing director and such an amazing guy that… I mean, I can’t explain it, he’s such a legend and it’s such an honor. I’m so blessed and privileged to be able to work with him.

Now with Let Me In when it first was announced, a lot of people seemed to not be happy about it. But when you were cast, quite a few people seemed to think it could very well work. Have you seen the original Let the Right One In?

I have seen parts of Let the Right One In but I haven’t seen the whole film because, for one reason, I didn’t want it to affect my acting and the way I took the character on. And two, my mom won’t let me watch the whole thing [Laughing].

What did you like about Abby?

You know, the character of Abby is so unique, and I was able to portray a different aspect of vampires. In almost every vampire movie you see them all glorious and beautiful. And in this film, my character Abby, who is a vampire, is put upon and she’s not beautiful but, she’s beautiful in a way like a hurt puppy dog.

What did you like about the script and the film itself?

It’s so unique and it was so well written and all the amazing actors in it, Richard Jenkins and Kodi Smit-McPhee… everyone in the film, it was so amazing to even think about working on it.

It is a great cast.

Yeah, and Matt Reeves is such an amazing director.

How aware are you of the remake controversy when it comes to this, do you ever read the forums and such?

No, I don’t read any of that stuff. Honestly I don’t read any of the message boards or anything like that. I’m really not allowed to do that stuff.

I think that is best thing you can do.

Me too.

How do you fit all this in? You have like 200 films coming out…

[Laughing] Yeah.

How do you decide what to do next?

We just look for really great roles, if it’s a role that I think can challenge me and I think I can do it successfully, then that is what we look for.

Now going back a little to Kick-Ass, and I’m sure you’ve been asked this many times before, but was it ever a concern what you were going to be asked to do in terms of violence and language?

If it had been cussing for no reason, we wouldn’t have done it, or if it had been crude and gratuitous for no reason, we wouldn’t have done it. This girl had a reason that she cussed and killed. She didn’t know any better. She was basically brainwashed, think about it, if all you do is watch films with cussing and shooting and stuff, if you don’t know any better and you’ve been stuck in a house all your life you wouldn’t know any better. It would just be your life.

Well I think the people that complain about it oftentimes haven’t watched the film, especially the scene where Nicholas Cage claims he’s made a mistake…

Exactly… yeah.
