IAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Ray Liotta Talks 'The Iceman,' 'The Place Beyond the Pines,' 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' and 'The Muppets ... Again!'

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over twenty years since the release of Goodfellas! It’s even harder to believe that actor Ray Liotta has not played a mobster since his career-making role in the Martin Scorsese classic.

While he’s portrayed a string of dirty cops in films like Unlawful Entry, Copland, Narc, Street Kings: Motor City, and Son of No One, as well as The Place Beyond the Pines, which is currently in limited release in theaters and opens wide on April 12th, the veteran actor who’s name seems synonymous with the Mafia has not revisited the genre that made him famous until now.

Liotta can soon be seen in director Ariel Vroman’s new movie The Iceman, which opens in theaters on May 2nd and is based on a true story. Liotta plays real life mobster Roy DeMeo opposite Michael Shannon (Man of Steel) as convicted serial killer Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski. The film also boasts an impressive cast of supporting actors including Winona Ryder (Star Trek), Chris Evans (The Avengers), David Schwimmer (Madagascar), Stephen Dorff (Immortals), Robert Davi (The Goonies), and James Franco (Oz the Great and Powerful). As if that wasn’t enough, the actor also has small roles in two highly anticipated upcoming sequels. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, opening in theaters on October 4th. As well as The Muppets … Again, which is scheduled for release on March 24th, 2014.

I recently had a chance to speak briefly with Ray Liotta at the opening night of the Sonoma Film Festival in Sonoma, California, where The Iceman was kicking off the five-day festival. In addition to talking about The Iceman, we also had a chance to discuss his work on The Place Beyond the Pines, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and The Muppets … Again!

Here is what he had to say:

IAR: To begin with, it’s been over 20 years since you played a mobster in Goodfellas, what made you want to return to the genre for The Iceman?

Ray Liotta: They asked me to do it. I haven’t played somebody in the Mafia since Goodfellas so it’s been over 20 years. It was just a really good script. I met the director, Ariel (Vromen), who I liked a lot. So I just wanted to be a part of it.

Did you do any research into the real life of Roy DeMeo to prepare for your role?

Liotta: No, I mean I read books and stuff because it’s a true story. Michael Shannon plays Richard Kuklinski and I play a guy that hires him. This guy (Roy DeMeo) that has a crew that he looks after.

I recently spoke to you’re The Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cinafrance and he said that you are a “national treasure” and “someday they’ll be carving your face in mountains.” He really loved working with you! Did you enjoy working with him on that film?

Liotta: I love Derek. I really do. He’s a really good director. I like his sensibilities. I like his passion about movies and the kind of stories that he wants to tell. So he was great. So was Ariel. Ariel is the same kind of guy.

What was it like working with director Robert Rodriguez on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For?

Liotta: It was great. I was just in there for a day. So I was in and out, and it was all working with green screen.

What was your experience like working with green screen?

Liotta: It’s not as if there are dinosaurs chasing you, your still working with the actor who you are working with. Then they do whatever they do. I don’t even know what they’re going to do.

Have you filmed your scenes for The Muppets … Again! yet?

Liotta: Yea, I just finished the Muppet movie.

What do you do in that film?

Liotta: I’m singing and dancing with Danny Trejo (Machete).

Was that your first time singing and dancing on screen?

Liotta: Yea, but I did musical theater. Although, it was my first time doing it with the Muppets! But this is the second film I’ve done with them (NOTE: Liotta also appeared in Muppets from Space).

The Iceman opens in theaters on May 2nd.
