It’s been surprising to see the Danny Boyle directed, James Franco-starring 127 Hours get pretty much shut out of major awards nominations, such as yesterdays DGA nominees.  It’s a visceral, well-made film, and Franco’s fantastic in it, so given that it’s Boyle’s follow-up to Slumdog Millionaire, I was expecting more awards talk.

Well, Boyle and Franco can take solace in the fact that 127 Hours is the week’s most pirated film, with more downloads than flicks with far wider audiences, like Little Fockers and True Grit

True Grit finally did it. In its third week of release, The Coen Brothers's highest grossing film to date managed to bump Little Fockers from the number one spot. With the addition of this week's $15 million at the box office, the western's total haul so far is an impressive $110 million. Fockers, however, came in a close second with nearly $13.8 million for the weekend.

As far as new releases go, Nicolas Cage’s latest, Season of the Witch, debuted in the #3 spot with a respectable $10.8 million. Country Strong, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow as a has been country star, expanded into wide release and found itself in the #6 spot, earning $7.3 million.

This weekend found Little Fockers opening in the #1 position with $34 million ($48 million including Wednesday and Thursday’s take). While that may seem like a win for Universal, it is below expectations when compared to the previous sequel, Meet the Fockers, which opened at $46 million in three days.

True Grit captured some pretty impressive numbers in the #2 position. It managed a $25.6 million opening which is the biggest opening ever for Joel and Ethan Coen. Thanks to a well-received advertising campaign and strong word-of-mouth True Grit earned $36.8 million including Wednesday and Thursday’s numbers. And with a budget of a mere $38 million, Paramount should be mighty happy with the past weekend.

Little Fockers outsold both True Grit and Tron: Legacy at the Wednesday box office. Fockers sold an estimated $7.2 million in ticket sales. The film opened domestically in 3,536 theaters.

Preliminary estimates indicate that despite the strong opening, the film will need to gain some serious steam in order to reach the expected $60 million debut.

Dustin Hoffman will reunite with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro on Little Fockers after all, reports Deadline.com. While the original cut of the film, due out this December, didn't include Hoffman, Universal saw fit to film at least four new scenes featuring the Oscar-winning actor, as well as his on-screen Focker wife, Barbara Streisand.

Jay Roach is one of the smartest comedic directors around. Whether he is tackling Austin Powers or the Focker family, he delivers very funny and also very sharp bits of humor.

What he also brings to the table is the ability to direct some of the funniest actors in the business. There is a reason guys like Ben Stiller and Mike Myers like working with Jay. He has the talent to mix the crude, rude and heartbreaking all into one story.

A new featurette has been released for Little Fockers and it accidentally does a pretty good job of explaining why Meet the Parents was a really good idea and the sequels to it are not.

Ready to meet the 'Little Fockers'?

Friday, 25 June 2010 08:14

Sometimes a movie franchise is able to keep forging ahead just based on the charisma and chemistry between its main stars; the Meet the Parents films are certainly in that category. The dynamic between Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro is just too enjoyable to ignore, and let's face it: no matter how many times they make nice, there's always going to be some tension between in-laws and the one who took their baby away. (Besides, Ben Stiller is just easy to pick on.)

So it is that Little Fockers is on its way this December, with Stiller, De Niro, Teri Polo, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner and Barbara Streisand all returning and being joined by newbies Jessica Alba, Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel (!!) and, of course, the "little Fockers".

It has taken 10 years, two little Fockers with wife Pam (Teri Polo) and countless hurdles for Greg (Ben Stiller) to finally get “in” with his tightly wound father-in-law, Jack (Robert De Niro). When Greg and Pam’s entire clan — including Pam’s lovelorn ex, Kevin (Owen Wilson) — descends for the twins’ birthday party, Greg must prove to the skeptical Jack that he’s fully capable as the man of the house.
