Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson is one of the most talented actresses in the business. Throughout the years she has always challenged herself and created some very strong and fascinating portrayals. Looking back, there are so many of her films that stand out, whether it be from critical acclaim or the amount of awards garnered, she has been a part of some very impressive motion pictures.

Still, Emma has proven that she can challenge herself in fun and creative ways. From her work in Harry Potter to the quirky “Nanny McPhee”, she is not shy about taking on the odd and the wonderful. Although it is far from surprising that she is so good at the goofy since she did start out in comedy. And this week with the release of Nanny McPhee Returns, we celebrate her brilliant career by taking a look at some of her most memorable performances.

5. Nanny McPhee Returns

It’s shocking how completely different this character is and frankly, how risky it could have been. McPhee is so far from Emma but she makes the role her own, and was able to create a franchise out of it. Even more impressive is the fact that the sequel is arguably better than the original. Don’t be surprised to see more of this character in the future.

4. Last Chance Harvey

This little love story came as a real surprise. Who would’ve thought that Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman would make such a sweet and romantic pair? This is a charming movie that lingers just a little bit in sentimentality, but it is definitely one to watch for both of these wonderful performances.

3. Sense and Sensibility

Emma won an Academy Award for her screenplay for this adaptation of Jane Austin’s very famous novel. She was equally impressive with her performance as Elinor Dashwood, for which she was also nominated for an Oscar. While many may find this to be her finest moment, it is hard to narrow it down to just five movies when it comes to a woman as talented as this.

2. Wit

While Wit was not a feature film, her work was simply stunning. Again, as co-writer and actress she conveyed a sense of fear, depression, anxiety and anything else you can think for someone who had been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Once again, Emma proves to be a magnificently original and gifted talent.

1. Howard’s End

This superb Merchant Ivory film gathered some truly impressive names to its cast. You have Sir Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave and of course, Emma Thompson. The role of Margaret Schlegel won her an Academy Award for Best Actress and really started her on a rewarding path in Hollywood. It was clear way back in 1992 that she was destined for a long and impressive career.

Here is an easy one, what is your favorite Emma Thompson performance?
