'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Mega-Trailer and Production Diary

The extended trailer that debuted today spends three minutes conveying just how eventful an event movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be when it arrives in theaters next month.

J.R.R. Tolkien's novel may have been a relatively small scale and straightforward story introducing readers to Middle Earth, but in this second Hobbit film, Hobbiton isn't even visible in the rear-view mirror anymore, it seems.

From its portentous opening concerned with kings and the impending resurgence of Sauron right up until the last moments teasing the massive dragon himself, this jumbo-sized trailer makes it clear that The Desolation of Smaug itself is jumbo-sized.  This isn't a jaunt through the forest.  It's a top-dollar blockbuster spectacle buffet, with Peter Jackson serving up helping after helping of lavishly rendered visuals and, often, grave seriousness.

Bilbo Baggins continues his odyssey outside of the Shire, traveling with Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarves through Mirkwood Forest and Lake-Town, ecnountering new allies and obstacles every step of the way.  While Gandalf the Grey investigates the rumblings of Sauron's return, Bilbo heads towards the Lonely Mountain, where he'll encounter the devious hoarder of a dragon within.

Turning today into a full-blown Desolation of Smaug bonanza, Jackson and company unveiled the extended trailer above as part of a big fan event.  During that dog and pony show, the director promised an upcoming production diary would chronicle portions of the summer's ten weeks of pick-up photography, which involved the Battle of the Five Armies, an epic action sequence in The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

In no time at all, the production diary arrived online. Feast your eye-tongues on this behind-the-scenes-popsicle hosted by the ever-amiable Jackson right here:
