First Trailer and Poster: Kevin Costner Has '3 Days to Kill' in McG's Wild Action-Thriller

The first theatrical trailer for next year's 3 Days to Kill finds two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Costner throwing down as we've never seen him throw down before.

This darkly comic action thriller stars Costner as an unstoppably capable and badass assassin, Ethan Runner.

A legendary international espionage agent, Runner is looking to hang up his spurs in order to spend more quality time with his family.  When he's diagnosed with a terminal illness, though, Runner is lured back into the service in exchange for a dose of an experimental and highly unstable drug that could very well save his life.  Once its in his system, the hallucinatory effects of the drug seriously impair his ability to complete his all-important final mission.

3 Days to Kill has a real action pedigree.  It's written by Adi Hasak and Luc Besson (director of The Professional, The Fifth Element, and La Femme Nikita), the film is part of collaboration between Relativity Media and Besson's EuropaCorp, a co-financing and distributing plan designed to bring unique movies to domestic and international audiences.  Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and president Tucker Tooley serve as producer and executive producer, respectively.

The film is latest from director McG, best known for bringing self-aware slickness to films such as Charlie's Angels and This Means War.  From the look of this trailer, the director's command of action has never been more complete.  A reliance on practical, high-impact stunt work distinguishes 3 Days to Kill from other contemporary actioners.  The film's nimble sense of humor is also a welcome change of pace.

In addition to Costner, seen this summer in Man of Steel, 3 Days to Kill boasts a formidable supporting cast.  There's Amber Heard, familiar from her roles in The Rum Diary and Zombieland, as Runner's primary agency contact and a character who we suspect is keeping no shortage of secrets.  Oscar-nominated True Grit and Ender's Game star Hailee Steinfeld, meanwhile, plays Runner's daughter, with Gladiator standout Connie Nielsen as her mother.

3 Days to Kill is set to open in theaters nationwide on February 21, 2014.

Relativity also dropped the first official poster for the film:

Full Disclosure: 3 Days to Kill is produced by Relativity Media, iamROGUE's parent company.
