Halloween Horror Nights 2010 is a Scary Good Time!

Are you ready for the stench of death? Or the chilling screams that fill the darkest night? Well it’s finally here. The overwhelming sense of fear – or "what fear fear’s most" – came alive this past Friday night as Universal Studios Hollywood transformed itself into a nightmare to end all nightmares.

Halloween Horror Nights opened up its doors to fans hungry for a little bit of scary fun. The newest attractions this year included several new mazes, “Friday the 13th: Kill Jason, Kill”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street: Never Sleep Again”, “Vampyre: Castle of the Undead” and of course, the best and the most sadistic, “Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses: In 3-D Zombievision”.

As far as stench goes, you can’t beat the ick factor in “Saw: Game On”, a maze which features new traps and a bunch of nasty deaths. The most disturbing thing about this particular maze is the smell, as mentioned. Let’s just say if you ever wondered what it might have smelt like in that old bathroom the two men in Saw were trapped in, you can find out here. Putrid could be one word to describe it

The 3-D Zombievision also adds a special touch Rob Zombie's offering to the park this year. It offers a psychedelic journey through the mind of Mr. Zombie and his terrifying “Firefly Clan”. The 3-D glasses add an extra element of freak out factor, especially once you arrive at the lair of Dr. Satan. It is a bit hard to describe the eerie images the extra dimension adds. Somehow this little gimmick works, although it doesn’t hurt the fact that there are a number of well orchestrated scenes from the original film that come alive in this house of horrors.

For lovers of the Terror Tram, everybody’s favorite killer doll “Chucky” is on the prowl. While the concept was nice, there wasn’t quite enough of this mean old toy as you walked through The War of the Worlds plane crash set or the Psycho set. However, the nasty fellows that looked straight out of David Naughton’s dream sequence in An American Werewolf in London were plenty scary as they greeted you once you stepped off the tram.

HHN is always a favorite event this time of  year, especially since it gives horror fans a living, breathing recreation of their favorite monsters and madmen. The place is loaded with “scare zones” featuring zombies and psychos aplenty, and they go all out when it comes to setting the stage for spooks.

My one caveat this year is the remake heavy Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th mazes. Not that the new make-up wasn’t scream worthy, but as a fan of the classics, a little more old-school would have been much appreciated. The two mazes are all about the remake, no nostalgia factor whatsoever.

Still, if you are looking for a fantastic Halloween event and live in the Los Angeles area – for some it might be worth a vacation – HHN will be open on Oct. 1,2,8,9,15,16,17,21,22,23,24,28,29,30 and finally on Halloween! Be prepared, come early, as the lines get pretty long, but at least you are surrounded by fellow fodder just waiting to be the victim. Halloween Horror Nights is a perfect trick or treat for horror fans!
