Michael Bay Probably Letting Someone Else Direct 'Transformers 5'

After four rounds of Autobot action, Michael Bay may finally be ready to let go of the Transformers movies in order to start "a new chapter" in his artistic development.

Since kicking off the series in 2007, Bay has only directed one movie not involving Optimus Prime: last year's aggro-crime-comedy Pain & Gain

So far this summer, Transformers: Age of Extinction has earned $242.8 million and will likely end up with the lowest domestic grosses in the franchise, but globally it has raked in over $1 billion, second only to Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

When that third movie came out in 2011, Bay swore that it would be his swan song with the series.  In fact, he said that he was only lured back for a third installment in order to prove he still had the juice after the profitable but universally despised Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  For a while, Paramount and Hasbro were developing a fourth Transformers without Bay as director.  He eventually signed up for Age of Extinction, but said that it would "absolutely" be his last dance with the Decepticons

A profile that also shouts out Bay's work as a producer on this summer's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Purge: Anarchy says that the director "believes he will pass the baton for future Transformer movies to a new director while he turns his focus elsewhere."

"There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make," Bay tells USA Today. "I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles."

One of the stories that Bay, an outspoken animal lover, is looking to tell is a documentary on elephant poaching.  It's hard to imagine what cinema's current master of explosions would do with a documentary, particularly one about something as horrible as elephant poaching, but it sounds a hell of a lot more interesting than another goddamn Transformers.

And another goddamn Transformers is certainly on the way with or without Michael BayParamount is planning to release Transformers 5 during the summer of 2016, and we're guessing Ehren Kruger is hashing out the sequel's story right about now.  Kruger joined the series co-writing Revenge of the Fallen, and he's the sole credited writer on the last two Transformers.

Earlier this summer, Kruger told Collider about developing Transformers: Age of Extinction for a director other than Bay, saying, "There was a version of it which was different when we weren’t sure if Michael was going to come back and direct it and then the mandate would have been for something that was probably less expensive of a movie and that would have had the same themes, but it would have been a different animal. Then once Michael fully committed saying he wanted to still play in this sandbox, he’s always going to try and top himself. So the smaller version pretty much went away."

And now, a Vanilla Ice music video directed by Michael Bay:
