'The Best of Me' Trailer and Poster: First Love Reawakens Decades Later

Time after time, James Marsden has been relegated to the role of the romantic also-ran, the really nice guy who doesn't end up with the girl.

He's competed with Wolverine, Superman, and, most memorably, Ryan Gosling in The Notebook.

Another Nicholas Sparks adaptation, the upcoming The Best of Me, finally gives Marsden a chance to shine as a romantic leading man, pairing him with Michelle Monaghan in a story about first love echoing throughout very different lives.

Like the bestseller by Sparks, the film adaptation splits its time between two different settings, twenty years apart, meaning that Marsden (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) and Monaghan (HBO's True Detective) play the same characters as Luke Bracey (next year's Point Break remake) and Liana Liberato (Stuck in Love).

All four actors play Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier, blissfully happy high school sweethearts whose love is torn asunder by forces beyond their control.  Two decades later, Dawson and Amanda return to their small town for the funeral of an old friend.  Reunited, the former lovers find that time hasn't diminished their feelings for one another, but will they overcome old and new obstacles to fulfill their second chance at true love?

Relativity Media, the studio that brought you Sparks adaptations Dear John, The Lucky One, and Safe Haven, debuted a new theatrical trailer for The Best of Me today.

Michael Hoffman, who has earned accolades aplenty between movies such as The Last Station, One Fine Day, and The Emperor's Club, directs The Best of Me from a screenplay that he also co-wrote with J. Mills Goodloe (Pride) and Will Fetters (The Lucky One).

The supporting cast here includes Schuyler Fisk (Orange County), Gerald McRaney (Netflix's House of Cards), Jon Tenney (Green Lantern), and Sebastian Arcelus (HBO's The Leftovers).

The Best of Me is set to open in theaters nationwide on October 17th.

Check out the official synopsis followed by a romantic new poster:

Based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me tells the story of Dawson and Amanda, two former high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend. Their bittersweet reunion reignites the love they’ve never forgotten, but soon they discover the forces that drove them apart twenty years ago live on, posing even more serious threats today. Spanning decades, this epic love story captures  the enduring power of our first true love, and the wrenching choices we face when confronted with elusive second chances
