'Captain Marvel' Starring in Her Own Solo Movie Set for July 2018

In Phase Three, Marvel's superhero franchises are getting a whole lot more diverse.

Not only will Black Panther represent Wakanda in 2017, but Captain Marvel will launch the first Marvel Studios film led by a woman in theaters on July 6, 2018.

Yes, the nineteenth movie since Marvel Studios began its unprecedented run of blockbusters is set to be the first in which a female superhero gets the spotlight all to herself.

Today's big Marvel-palooza announcement-fest at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood found the Disney subsidiary's president, Kevin Feige, announcing no fewer than nine feature films comprising Phase Three, which stretches from 2016 through 2019.

So far, the biggest female presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been Scarlett Johansson's assassin and spy Black Widow.  Plenty of fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow movie, but during the event's Q&A, Feige explained that Natasha Romanoff will remain a supporting player in the Avengers sequels and other superhero adventures.

Instead of Black Widow, Captain Marvel will be the first double-X chromosome MCU hero to star in her own movie.  Feige left absolutely no doubt that Captain Marvel is indeed about a woman, saying, that though plenty of characters have been called Captain Marvel over the years, "This Captain Marvel’s name is Carol Danvers."

Danvers is a Major in the Air Force whose DNA is combined with Kree (Ronan, the bad guy in Guardians of the Galaxy, is a Kree) genetic material, giving her an expansive power-set that includes flight, near-invulnerability, and even laser blasts. As a superhero he's gone by plenty of different names including Ms. Marvel, Warbird, and, of course, Captain Marvel.

"This film has been in the works almost as long as Doctor Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy before it came out, and one of the key things was figuring out what we wanted to do with it.  Her adventures are very earthbound, but her powers are based in the cosmic realm” said Feige.

The role has yet to be cast, but rumors have long suggested that Emily Blunt could be the actress to slip on Ms. Marvel's gloves.  She was, after all, the initial choice to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but scheduling issues prevented her from accepting the role.  Around the internet, Starbuck herself Katee Sackhoff is frequently the subject of fancasting, but it's more likely that Marvel will seek out a bigger name.

It's possible that Captain Marvel will make her cinematic debut well before her solo movie reaches screens.  After all, Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa is poised to play a big part in Captain America: Civil War before his solo film in 2017.  And there was that report earlier this month, the one asserting that Captain Marvel might pop up as early as Avengers: Age of Ultron.
