Quentin Tarantino Locks Down His 'Hateful Eight' Cast

With word that he's officially a part of the phenomenal cast of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, Channing Tatum's transformation is complete.

Just a few years ago, Tatum was dismissed as little more than a beefcake.  Now he's got a major action-comedy franchise under his belt (21 Jump Street), plenty of awards season discussion (Foxcatcher), another movie based on his experiences as a male strumpet (Magic Mike XXL), and even his own card-slingin' X-Men spinoff (Gambit).

So even before he snagged a role in Tarantino's next Western, Tatum was doing fine.  His part in The Hateful Eight, though reportedly small, puts him in exceedingly good company.

The Weinstein Company announced the principal cast of the Django Unchained follow-up today, and it's a group of predictably phenomenal actors.  Playing the eight titular characters are Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, and Demian Bichir.

This eclectic group is brought together on the frontier when a blizzard waylays a wagon in a remote haberdashery, setting the stage for a slow burn of tension as these volatile figures slowly face off against one another.

After briefly hanging up The Hateful Eight's spurs after an script leak this year, Tarantino is now planning on shooting the western in Colorado early next year.  The celluloid-loving director will shoot on 65mm film.  When the movie actually opens wide, probably during the holidays next year, it'll get a huge 70mm release, allowing audiences to experience The Hateful Eight in glorious Super CinemaScope.

Before then, though, the film is tentatively set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next September.

In addition to confirming the full cast, TWC unveiled an updated synopsis of the story, which you can peep right here:

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…
