The Great Daniel Bruhl Joins 'Captain America: Civil War' as the Villain

With Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. squaring off as Cap and Iron Man, Captain America: Civil War already pre-sold a lot of tickets, but the sequel just keeps getting cooler anyway.

The incomparable and criminally underappreciated Daniel Bruhl is entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing the mysterious antagonist in Civil War.

A Spanish-born German actor, Bruhl became known to American audiences as the initially boyish and eventually sinister all-star German sniper in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, playing both sides of that switch with relish.  He stole Ron Howard's excellent two-hander Rush out from under Thor himself Chris Hemsworth last year.  He also appeared alongside newly minted Doctor Strange in The Fifth Estate last year.

Put briefly, Bruhl is an outstanding actor, one who could benefit enormously from the huge exposure that comes with every Marvel blockbuster.

The announcement of his casting comes straight from Marvel, though Deadline adds that Bruhl is playing the as-yet unidentified villain.  Cue rampant baseless speculation as to just whom Bruhl might be bringing to the big screen.  Baron Zemo?  The Red Skull reborn?  MODOK?  According to Variety, the character could also the big bad in Doctor Strange, making a Loki-style jump from one franchise to another.

“With Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Marvel honcho Kevin Feige in the announcement.

Evans reprises his star-spangled role as Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, going toe-to-toe with Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark as they battle of superheroic registration and policing duties.

Sebastian Stan is set to return as Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Solider, though he's not mentioned in today's casting declaration.  Nor are Samuel L. Jackson or Scarlett Johansson, but Deadline reports that they're both likely to appear.

As revealed at the big Phase 3 shindig a few weeks back, Chadwick Boseman will play Black Panther in Civil War, while Jeremy Renner has strongly implied that Hawkeye will sling arrows in this patriotic sequel.

Joe and Anthony Russo, who upped Marvel's action game substantially with Captain America: The Winter Soldier this year, are returning to direct Captain America: Civil War, and they've been heavily rumored to pick up where Joss Whedon leaves off, directing Avengers: Infinity Wars - Parts I and II back-to-back.

Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, who wrote the last two installments, are currently hammering out the script for this crazily anticipated and increasingly crowded Marvel mega-movie.

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to open nationwide on May 6, 2016.
