JJ Abrams Unleashes the First 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Teaser Trailer

If you were planning on hitting your local multiplex just to catch the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, cancel your plans.

Disney has unveiled the first official look at the crazily-anticipated sequel, showing off new characters, familiar hardware, and an aggressive style that will make fans feel as though they're actually in a galaxy far, far away for the first time in a very long time.

This trailer does exactly what a teaser is designed to do, offering up tantalizing glimpses of the inaugural movie in the Disney era of Star Wars.  Though everything on display is exciting and definitely works hard to capture an old school Star Wars feel, the teaser also keeps the Mystery Box mostly shut tight, just the way J.J. Abrams likes that.  It's exciting without giving away any of the story, which Abrams and company have guarded like that Death Star plans.

It clocks in at eighty-eight seconds, so getting into the story isn't the point of this trailer.  This trailer is an announcement, a declaration.  Like the title, this first look at The Force Awakens is doing some heavy lifting without using too many muscles.

The trailer confirms the longstanding rumor that one of our new heroes, the one played by Attack the Block badass John Boyega, starts off as a stormtrooper before events on a Tatooine-like planet that isn't Tatooine draw he and another new lead played by Daisy Ridley (seen tooling around on a pretty boss speeder-hog) into a galactic adventure with some old friends.

The trailer premiered at Apple this morning.  To see it in crisp, clean high definition, hit the jump to hyperspace and watch it over there.

Okay, there's obviously a lot to chew on here.  For one thing, this doesn't look or feel like the prequels.  In much the same way that the title subtly lays claim to that old Star Wars magic, so too does this teaser act as a prequel palette-cleanser, eschewing green screen for real tactile locations and throwing bland staging out the window in favor of high-speed fun.

It's surprising as all hell that this trailer doesn't trot out the many familiar characters appearing the sequel.  There's no sign of them here though,  Instead, we get Boyega, Ridley, and Oscar Isaac piloting an X-Wing like a boss.

And for all the channeling of the original trilogy that Abrams is doing here, the style isn't merely a replication of George Lucas's first Star Wars.  Instead, Abrams is bringing some that high energy Star Trek filmmaking, giving the action a visceral kick.

Isn't it crazy that there's no actual space in this Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer?  Everything we see here happens in-atmosphere somewhere.  Unrelated: whose voice is that at the top of the trailer?

Boyega, Ridley, and Isaac get some support from fellow newcomers Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Adam Driver, and Max Von Sydow.  They're joined by original trilogy players Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Warwick Davis.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to open nationwide on December 18, 2015
