'San Andreas' Trailer: Dwayne Johnson vs. The Mother of All Earthquakes

The Rock has finally met an opponent on his level, an antagonist he can't possibly pummel into submission: a supermassive earthquake.

In San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson finds himself in the rare position of being relatively powerless, racing against time to save the ones he loves from a quake laying waste to all of California.

The first trailer for San Andreas showcases the epic scale of the landmark-leveling quake that topples the Hollywood sign, brings down the Hoover Dam, and turns LA into a sinkhole.  A bunch of images from the movie, meanwhile, show off The Rock's tectonic muscles.

This movie kicks off with the biggest earthquake ever recorded leveling much of California.  A Los Angeles firefighter, Johnson's character Ray sets out on odyssey to rescue his imperiled daughter up in San Francisco.  The daughter's played by Alexandra Daddario, who stars alongside Mr. Rock and Carla Gugino.  Yes, Daddario and Gugino are in a movie together, presenting all the incentive to see San Andreas that most male moviegoers will need.

While Daddario and Gugino together are what blockbusters are truly made of, San Andreas is obviously sold on CGI mega-destruction.

"We're going to show what the largest earthquake ever recorded would look like, all in a highly populated area," director Brad Peyton tells USA Today. "And this earthquake would have the potential for global impact because the Earth is having an event.’'

"It all goes down. The damage, destruction, the loss of lives. Everything that you know on the West Coast doesn't see tomorrow,” says Johnson.

His character goes on quite a quest to rescue his offspring, a journey that puts him behind the wheel of many a vehicle once his trusty chopper bites the dust. "There's nothing that I don't pilot or drive. We utilize everything we can to get there," Johnson explains. "This has big stakes. It's entertaining and also has heart."

San Andreas also stars Paul Giamatti, Ioan Gruffudd, Kyle Minogue, Will Yun Lee, and Colton Haynes.

It's a reunion between Johnson and Peyton, the Casts & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore helmer who directed him in the 3D family adventure Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.  Peyton is taking a swing at the big time with this Roland Emmerich-looking destructo-fest, and he struck fear into the heart of The Rock in the process.

"Now we have multiple earthquake kits at home. And when you realize the magnitude of this, you go home grateful for the days you have," Johnson says. "It gives you a different perspective. It makes you stop and think that there's no beating Mother Nature. She's the toughest mama around."

San Andreas rumbles at a theater near you May 29 2015.
