Roberto Orci's 'Star Trek 3' Script Ejected into the Vacuum of Space

First Roberto Orci was kicked out of the captain's chair as director of Star Trek 3.

Now that a new director with his blockbuster bona-fides is at the helm of the Enterprise, Orci's script has also been jettisoned.

With J.J. Abrams busy on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Orci spent months calling the shots on the third entry in this rebooted spacefaring franchise.  Finally, someone came to their senses and realized that a guy with zero directorial experience who co-wrote Transformers and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 probably wasn't the best choice to oversee the next adventure of Captain Kirk and company.

The search for a replacement helmer ended last week, with Paramount, Skydance, and Bad Robot landing Justin Lin, who turned the Fast & Furious franchise into a global powerhouse.

Having secured Lin, Paramount scheduled Star Trek 3 (or Star Trek 13, depending on how you look at it) for July 8, 2016.

2016 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's original Trek series, so we knew Star Trek 3 would be a 2016 release, but the prime July date means that Lin will have to whip this sucker into shape post-haste.

As such, we were wondering if the screenplay Orci wrote with Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne was still in play.  Orci himself has clarified that shuffle behind the scenes also means a big creative shift: the man who was previously director, co-writer, and producer is now only producing.

Orci took to the message boards at TrekMovie, where he once famously berated fans who didn't like Star Trek Into Darkness, to declare of Star Trek 3, "I'm producing, [nothing] more or less."

When a commander asked if Orci diehards ought to boycott Star Trek 3, the producer responded (oddly), “I won’t lie, I don’t know yet, but the story we are [talking about] would be awesome, hang in there!”

What that story might be is anyone's guess.  When word of Orci's directorial dismissal first hit, we heard a rumor that his story found the crew of the Enterprise racing against the Vulcans and a new alien species to get their hands on a time travel device

That explained the William Shatner cameo.  With Orci no longer bringing that Cowboys & Aliens/Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen magic to the Star Trek 3 script, though, just what Kirk's up to this time is anybody's guess.  One way or another, though, Star Trek 3 is on the way at warp speed, and it'll feature the returning cast led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana.
