Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Ryan Gosling Starring in 'The Big Short'

Holy hell, The Big Short is putting together a remarkable cast.

How remarkable?  Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, and now Steve Carell are all getting set to star in the true-life drama based Michael Lewis's bestselling account of the 2008 market collapse.

The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, which hit bookshelves in 2010, chronicles the creation and bursting of the credit bubble, primarily by way of the now-infamous credit default swaps.

Following the success of Moneyball, also based on a Lewis book, Pitt is producing though Plan B and is playing Ben Hockett, a partner at Cornwall Capital, an investment firm that shorted subprime mortgages.

Unlike Moneyball, The Big Short is more of an ensemble piece, with Pitt playing a supporting role among a bunch of other A-listers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carell is talks to play Steven Eisman, a money manager who also did a bit of subprime shorting at FrontPoint Partners.  The Foxcatcher star is in talks, but the others are fully on board.  Gosling is playing Greg Lippman, a Deutsche Bank trader, with Bale committed to play Scion Capital founder Michael Burry, who predicted the crisis before damn near anybody else.

The Big Short marks a big change of pace for writer-director Adam McKay, who is directing his first straightforward drama after smuggling satire into absurd, seemingly dumb comedies like The Other Guys, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, and, most recently, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

“It’s the best book ever written about finance, banking, the stock market,” McKay said of the book last spring.

“It’s all about five guys who knew that the 2008 collapse was coming before it happened. Some of them try to warn people, and some go, ‘Screw it, I’m going to short the market!’ These were the few sane people who knew what was happening and it’s about what it’s like to be the one person in the room who actually knows that the building is about to collapse and no-one will believe you. It’s a page-turner. You read it and by the end you completely understand the ’08 collapse.”
