Great Scotty! Simon Pegg Co-Writing the New 'Star Trek 3' Script

Just as Scotty has been called upon to save the USS Enterprise so, so many times before, Simon Pegg is now belowdecks making sure Star Trek 3 boldly goes to theaters in July 2016.

Pegg, who plays Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott in the rebooted Trek franchise, is co-writing the next sequel with Doug Jung.

The man who inherited the role from Jimmy Doohan is better known as an actor, but Pegg is also a damn fine writer.  He and Edgar Wright wrote the Cornetto Trilogy, from Shaun of the Dead though Hot Fuzz to The World's End.  He also co-wrote Paul, Run Fatboy Run, and the straight-up classic British comedy Spaced.  Pegg's got his nerdly bona-fides in order, as well as fanboy-makes-good credibility.

Jung's less familiar than his co-writer, but he created the TNT series Dark Blue, wrote for the Cinemax show Banshee, and penned the 2003 con-man drama Confidence.  According to Deadline, his recent screenplay Diamond for Paramount and Bad Robot led directly to the Star Trek 3 gig.

They're part of new creative team on the sequel, taking over writing duties not long after Fast & Furious franchise dynamo Justin Lin took command of Star Trek 3 as director.  Roberto Orci was previously sitting in the captain's chair, making his feature directorial debut filling in for JJ Abrams, who has hands full with Star Wars: The Force AwakensMercifully, last month somebody figured out it might not be the best idea to hand a directorially untested writer of Transformers the key to a potentially massive franchise sequel.

Orci lost the directing job and his script – written with Patrick McCoy and J.D. Payne – was ejected into the vacuum of space like so much cosmic detritus.

At this point, we don't know if Pegg and Jung are starting from scratch or if they'll be repurposing Orci & Co.'s structure, setpieces, and so on.

Either way, they're going to have to haul ass, because Paramount has scheduled Star Trek 3 for July 8, 2016.  The studio has long been determined to release the sequel in 2016, the 60th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's original series.  That doesn't leave a lot of prep time for Lin, and it means the new screenwriters will have to work fast.

Pegg rejoins the Abramsverse cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Alice Eve.  It may just be their last voyage to the final frontier, as several of the stars are only contractually locked into three movies.
