'Birdman' Proves It's Still in the Fight with a Big Win at the Producers Guild Awards

The Producers Guild of America produced some winners for the PGA Awards this weekend.

Birdman won the top prize, which has seriously upset this awards season apple cart.

Why?  Because Boyhood has, by and large, been steamrolling Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) when it comes to Best Picture-style awards, though Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's surreal meta-drama has been no slouch in other categories.  So far, Boyhood has been the frontrunner for the biggest award at the Oscars next month.

Riggan Thompson floated above the fray at the Producers Guild Awards, though, and that's a big deal as an Academy Awards predictor.  The winner of Best Picture at the PGA Awards generally corresponds to the winner at the Oscars.  Last year, Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave split the PGA honors with Gravity before going on to win on the biggest of big nights.

The last time the one didn't predict the other was in 2006, when Little Miss Sunshine unexpectedly won the top prize. So Birdman's chances at achieving glory at next month's Oscar orgy of congratulation and pomp are stronger than we may have thought a week ago.

Elsewhere at this year's Producers Guild Awards, The LEGO Movie was recognized as the finest animated film of the year.  Producer Dan Lin accepted the award, and it must have been a soothing balm, since The LEGO Movie is one of the most notable omissions in a year when the Oscar nominations are defined by some pretty huge omissions.

Speaking of snubs, the Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself, which also didn't get the Academy nomination many were expecting, won the doc award from America's producers.
