'Ghostbusters' Reboot Casts Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones

Months of speculation come to an end today, as the cast of the Ghostbusters reboot has been revealed.

Since last October, when Paul Feig came aboard to direct an all-female rejiggering of the comedy classic, speculation has run rampant and virtually every funny actress in Hollywood has been bandied about as a potential 'Buster.

Earlier this month, we learned that Melissa McCarthy was in negotiations to lead the cast, now we know she'll be joined by Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

It's been a foregone conclusion that Feig would reunite with McCarthy after Bridesmaids, The Heat, and this summer's Spy.  Turns out he's also enlisted Bridesmaids star and co-writer Wiig.  The Saturday Night Live veteran is getting plenty of company from Studio 8H, because both McKinnon and Jones are current SNL castmembers.

While McCarthy has overcome some scheduling issues to fully sign on for Ghostbusters, he co-stars are all still in negotiations with Sony to star.  Their deals must be very nearly done, however, because Feig himself announced the casting on Twitter, sharing this image:

And that's not all.  According to Variety, fellow Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong "is likely to play a government official similar to the role William Atherton played in the original."

This is one hell of a cast.  All of these women are formidably funny, and it's nice to see Feig honoring the SNL pedigree of the 1984 original.

Together, these actresses make it clear that this isn't a novelty act, an impression Feig addressed this month, saying, "A lot of people accused it of being a gimmick. I guess I can see the cynics' view of it, but for me I just love working with funny women. People said, 'Why don't you do a mix?' I'm just more interested in the idea of lady Ghostbusters. It's the way my brain works."

Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is a producer on the reboot, which is currently being co-written by Feig and The Heat scribe Kate Dippold.

If all goes according to plan, the Ghostbusters reboot will kick off production this summer in New York.
