'Magic Mike XXL' Teaser Trailer Grinds, Thrusts, and Gyrates Into America's Heart

Like Bruce Wayne seeing the batsignal, Channing Tatum hears Ginuwine's "Pony" and simply can't help but bust his smoothest, sexiest dance moves.

That's how the first trailer for Magic Mike XXL opens: with a mythic ring, as though "Magic" Mike's return to the thrusting arts is he answer of a heroic, Campbellian call to adventure.

Of course, what follows is just under a minute of flexing, gyrating, ecstatic man candy in action.

Though it's but a teaser, this trailer reinforces the impression that Magic Mike XXL is going to be a bit lighter than its predecessor.  Where Magic Mike chronicled a younger stripper's descent into drugs and misanthropy, the sequel is more of a road movie follwing Mike and the Kings of Tampa heading to Myrtle Beach for an absolute blowout.

"Without giving a lot away, we don’t wanna make it a really serious, slice-of-life movie," Tatum himself said last year. "We want to have reality in it, but we don’t want to make it some dark drama.  There was some darkness in the last one that I think surprised people and shocked people."

Chan-Man leads a cast that includes returning players Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez Gabriel Iglesias, and Joe Manganiello, along with newbies Donald Glover, Elizabeth Banks, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Amber Heard, Andie MacDowell, and Michael StrahanMatthew McConaughey isn't back, but Magic Mike XXL doesn't appear to have lost any exuberance:

Steven Soderbergh remains retired from the directing-feature-films game, but he is acting as cinematographer and editor under his Peter Andrews and Mary Ann Bernard pseudonyms.  He's also acting as executive producer, but his longtime first assistant director Gregory Jacobs takes over as director on the Magic Mike sequel.

Tatum's producing partner Reid Carolin once again wrote the screenplay, drawing inspiration from Tatum's real-life escapades before becoming America's favorite beefcake.  While he contributed to the first film's script but wasn't credited, Tatum's actually Carolin's co-writer on the sequel.

Magic Mike XXL rides again in theaters on July 1st.

Here's the official synopsis, which sounds like a hoot:

Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.
