'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' and 'Big Hero 6' Conquer the Visual Effects Society Awards

Apes and robots stormed the Beverly Hilton last night: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Big Hero 6 both won big at the 13th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards.

The VES Awards are among the cooler accolades that precede the Oscar awards-orgy every year, especially since the effort and artistry of the visual effects community are so often rewarded with punishing schedules and a lack of recognition elsewhere.  Plus, when an awards show is hosted by Patton Oswalt, you know it has some nerdlinger credibility.

The Visual Effects Society represents almost 3,000 VFX professionals around the world, and the VES Awards acknowledge visual effects excellence in 24 categories across live-action and animated feature films, television series, video games, and commercials.

For the two biggest feature film awards, VES makes the distinction between "effects-driven" and "supporting effects" movies.  This year, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took home the prize n the former category, solidifying it as the frontrunner for the Visual Effects Oscar.  After all, the VES Awards have predicted the Visual Effects Academy Award ten times in its thirteen-year history.  If Dawn does win later this month, it'll help make up for Rise of the Planet of the Apes being robbed by Hugo in 2011.  Birdman, meanwhile, won in the "supporting effects" category.

The night's biggest winner, though, was Disney Animation's Big Hero 6, which snagged five awards, shutting out fellow animated features The LEGO Movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and The Boxtrolls.  Winning five major awards, including Animation in an Animated Feature and Animated Character for Baymax, must take some of the sting out of Big Hero 6 winning just one trophy at the Annie Awards.

It also bodes well for Disney Animation's chances at the big show later this month.  The Animated Feature category is oddly competitive since everyone's favorite animated movie of last year, The LEGO Movie, isn't even nominated.

Take a look at all the winners at the Visual Effects Society, including the winners from the TV side of things, where Game of Thrones did quite well:
