Five 'Chappie' TV Spots Demonstrate the Evils of Robo-Prejudice

Neill Blomkamp kicked up a lot of digital dust talking like he's going to direct that Alien sequel with Sigourney Weaver last week, but the writer-director has an original slice of scifi coming up before he does/doesn't dance with a xenomorph.

It's Chappie

What's Chappie?  Five new TV spots spell out just what Chappie is pretty clearly, and it's very much in line with Blomkamp's previous efforts, District 9 and Elysium.

Sharlto Copley, who starred in the former and was the only thing that fully worked in the latter, stars as the title character, Chappie.

In a near-future where robots act as a militarized police force in Johannesburg, South Africa (Blomkamp's hometown), Chappie is a potentially dangerous anomaly: a robot that thinks and feels for itself.  The creation of a rogue scientist who intends Chappie for good, the 'bot is soon causing trouble, stirring up prejudice, political pressure, and violence in a city falling apart at the seams.

Copley plays Chappie via what he called "poor man's motion-capture" and he's joined in the film by Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver herself, along with Die Antwoord duo Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er.

So far, the promotion for Chappie has played up its resemblance to District 9.  Watching these five commercials, we can't help but wonder if they don't underline that connection a little too much, especially since so much of Chappie looks familiar, mixing Short Circuit and RoboCop pretty liberally.

Chappie hits regular and IMAX theaters on March 6th.

As for Blomkamp's possible Alien movie, time will tell.
