Scarlett Johansson to Take 'The Psychopath Test' for 'Austin Powers' Director

British journalist Jon Ronson's non-fiction bestseller The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry is an unlikely candidate for a movie adaptation, but it's getting one.

And it's an especially A-list adaption, so A-list, in fact, that Scarlett Johansson is set to star (presumably not as Ronson).

The book follows Ronson, who also wrote eventual George Clooney movie The Men Who Stare as Goats, on a journalistic jaunt into the world of psychopathy, chronicling the history of diagnosis and treatment for the psychological disorder.  More pertinent to the movie version, Ronson also encounters many a colorful character and wonders at the possibility that many of our captains of industry and cultural leaders are, in fact, psychopaths.

The Psychopath Test is being developed by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment as a "psychological thriller," according to Deadline.

Jay Roach is attached to direct, with Kristin Gore now on board to write the screenplay adapting Ronson's book.  Roach is the director who made an improbable leap from the Austin Powers series and Meet the Parents to fact-based HBO political dramas Game Change and Recount.  His forthcoming Trumbo, which stars Bryan Cranston as the blacklisted writer, is expected to be a heavy hitter next awards season.

Roach and Gore are already collaborators, as they're both working on the HBO scifi pilot Women in Space, with Roach set to direct and Gore writing.

Imagine's Brian Grazer is producing The Psychopath Test alongside Roach, Finola Dwyer, and Amanda Posey.

It's unknown just who Johansson might be playing, but her involvement makes it a whole lot more likely that The Psychopath Test will actually get made.

Even as she's held it down as the face of femininity in the Marvel movies, Johansson has done fascinating work in smaller films like Under the Skin, Her, and even Don Jon.  Her next Black Widow appearance is just around the corner in this May's Avengers: Age of Ultron, then she'll dust off her red wig for next year's Captain America: Civil War.

Having established herself as an action star outside of Marvel with Lucy last summer, Johansson is also on board to star in the live action anime adaptation Ghost in the Shell.
