'Terminator: Genisys' to Terminate in IMAX 3D This Summer

Unsurprisingly for a reboot/sequel/prequel continuing a major franchise that appeared to run out of gas more than a decade ago, Terminator: Genisys is officially set to play in IMAX 3D this summer.

The jumbo-sized, three-dimensional format underlines just how long this series has been around.  The last time Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as a T-800 (in 2003's by-the-numbers gubernatorial warmup Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), neither IMAX nor 3D were the blockbuster standards that they are now.

Schwarzenegger is back after sitting out Terminator: Salvation, so he can continue to get an unprecedented amount of mileage out of a catchphrase that, like the indestructible robo-killing machine itself, just will not die.  Thirty-one years after the first T-800 uttered "I'll be back," you can bet you'll be hearing it a whole lot in the lead-up to this new chapter's theatrical debut on July 1st.

This sequel, the first installment in a planned trilogy, loops around on James Cameron's original.  John Connor, leader of the future war against robots in 2029, sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect his mom in 1984.  Once there, Reese discovers that the original timeline has been overwritten by all Skynet's time travel antics. In this new timeline, Sarah Connor is already an unstoppable badass raised by a good guy T-800.  So Reese teams up with them to fight a new T-1000-style killer robot.

Alan Taylor, the Game of Thrones vet who last helmed Thor: The Dark World, is the latest director to fill Cameron's shoes.

While Schwarzenegger's return is being underlined, the lynchpin of the cast is actually Emilia Clarke as the new Sarah Connor, with Jai Courtney as Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Byung-hun Lee as a liquid-metal Terminator, and Matt Smith as a mysterious ally of John Connor's.  Courtney B. Vance and Dayo Okeniyi play the new Miles and Danny Dyson, with Oscar shoo-in JK Simmons as a detective obsessed with Sarah and the T-800.
