First Two 'Insurgent' Clips Showcase Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Miles Teller

The first two clips from next month's The Divergent Series: Insurgent are strikingly different from all the promotion we've seen for the sequel so far.

Sundry trailers, posters, and TV spots have played up Insurgent as an all-out action extravaganza, complete with gunfights and oodles of CGI.  Both of the clips Summit Entertainment has released, however, feel more they belong in a high school movie.

The second installment in a four-movie adaptation of Veronica Roth's bestselling YA trilogy picks up right where last year's Divergent left off: Tris and Four have abandoned futuristic Chicago and are now on the run, fugitives from the Erudite class.  As they and their allies attempt to marshal the Factionless for a full-blown war against Erudite, Jeanine, the leader of that power-hungry sect, is experimenting on a mysterious artifact, using innocent Divergents as lab rats.  And the lab rat Jeanine wants most is Tris.

Most of the first movie found Tris and Four feinting, flirting, and unconventionally courting one another.  By Insurgent, though, they're lovers on the lamb.  The first of these two clips gives both Shailene Woodley and Theo James the opportunity to be vulnerable together as Tris trips over her guilt and Four pleads with her not to go it alone.

The second, courtesy of Collider, takes place in Amity, the faction devoted to peaceful, simple living.  Tris's bully Peter naturally run amok, a wolf among sheep, giving Miles Teller a chance to have a little fun and apple some charm to a character without much of that.  Tris's brother Caleb, played by Woodley's Fault In Our Stars co-star Ansel Elgort, just sort of stands there.

Both clips are fine, but like the most recent trailer, they leave absolutely no aftertaste and contribute to the impression that despite its outstanding cast, The Divergent Series is something of a pre-fab YA franchise.

The aforementioned cast gets even more formidable in this sequel, adding Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts as the leaders of Amity and Factionless, respectively.

As for the returning players, there are a lot of them, from Woodley, James, Teller, and Elgort on through Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Mekhi Pfifer, Maggie Q, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, and Suki Waterhouse.

R.I.P.D. helmer Robert Schwentke takes over for Neil Burger, who directed Divergent but opted against returning for The Divergent Series: InsurgentJust last week we learned that Schwentke is on board to direct 2016's The Divergent Series: Allegiant - Part 1, which probably means he's overseeing 2017's Part 2, as well.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent arrives in 2D and 3D on March 20th.
