Drew Goddard to Write and Direct Marvel and Sony's 'Spider-Man' Reboot

So Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are rebooting Spider-Man in an unprecedented partnership that finds the wall-crawler finally joining Marvel's Cinematic Universe.

The new Spidey is set to debut in next year's Captain America: Civil War, directed by Winter Soldier duo Anthony and Joe Russo.

But who will direct the first solo Spider-Man movie of this new era, the one set for summer 2017?

How about Drew Goddard?

The Cloverfield writer made his feature directorial debut on the great The Cabin the Woods, which he co-wrote with Avengers helmer Joss Whedon.  An avowed comics fan, Goddard was also set to executive produce Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil series.  Though he did write the first two episodes, Goddard left that project to write and direct Sinister Six, a villainous team-up Sony planned to spin off from The Amazing Spider-Man series.

With The Amazing Spider-Man franchise now kaput, it seems that Sinister Six may have evolved into the new Spider-Movie.  Latino-Review reports that Goddard is on board to write and direct the first Spider-Man produced by Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige.

It's purely rumor at this point and totally uncorroborated by either Sony or Marvel, but handing the reins to Goddard would make a whole lot of sense.  He's talented as hell, for one thing, and sought-after for another.

If Goddard is indeed writing and directing Spidey's second reboot in a decade, then Sinister Six as we knew it is done for.  LR's source claims, however, that this 2017 movie, which may end up being titled The Spectacular Spider-Man, will involve the formation of the Sinister Six.  Then, if all goes well, the team of villains might get their own different movie way down the line.  The source also says this Spider-Man movie finds Spidey going up against Iron Man at one point in an attempt to "audition" for the Avengers.

And, if the source is to be believed, Spectacular Spider-Man movies be arriving at a prolific pace of one per-year.

Whomever directs this new version of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, it will involve a new Peter Parker.  Though this will be a younger version who is still in high school, we're not in for yet another retelling of the webslinger's origin.

To play this new Parker, the studios are reportedly looking at the likes of Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman, but there's a real sense that this third cinematic version of Spider-Man might not necessarily be another white dude.  Instead, the filmmakers might bring a bit more diversity into the superhero game with an African-American actor.  If that does happen, it would probably still be Peter Parker rather than Miles Morales, the popular Ultimate Spider-Man.

Captain America: Civil War introduces the new Spider-Man in theaters on May 6, 2016.  Then he'll lead his solo movie – possibly written and directed by Drew Goddard – in theaters on July 28, 2017.
