Star-Lord, Seth Rogen, and Shailene Woodley Rack Up MTV Movie Awards Nominations

The Saturn Awards are the only awards that matter, but the MTV Movie Awards is always a fun shindig too.

Actually, after the undue seriousness of awards season, particularly the ostentation and pomp of the Oscars, MTV's annual celebration of cinematic shenanigans tends to be a breath of fresh air, an awards show that bothers to be entertaining.

Not only that, but the MTV Movie Awards tend to hand out golden popcorn to more populist fare.  This year, for example, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Fault in Our Stars, and Neighbors lead the nominees with seven nods apiece.

Both Guardians and Faults are also in the running for Movie of the Year Presented by Geico, a category that also includes The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and Gone Girl, along with Oscar contenders Selma, Whiplash, American Sniper, and Boyhood.

Some buzzed-about performances that didn't snag Academy Award nominations have consolation prizes thanks to MTV nods, like Miles Teller or Channing Tatum for their Whipash and Foxcatcher turns.

There's not too much overlap with the prestige pictures, however, since MTV stacks the deck with delightful categories like Best Shirtless Performance, Best Fight, Best Kiss, Best Duo, and Best Scared-as-Shit Performance.

This year, the MTV Movie Awards are hosted by the one and only Amy Schumer, who stars in this summer's Trainwreck.  The show, which goes down at the Nokia Theater in downtown LA, will air live at 8pm on April 12th.
